Okay, so I'm sure I'm late to the party, but I had never realized UCF used that circular planning Walt Disney was so fond of. I guess it makes sense.

While i'm sure that was the case (Disney inspiration), I was told that the circular design was based on Atlantis

Flat as a board. It's a gigantic sandbar, what'd you expect? That said, I love living in Florida, especially during winter.

Beautiful campus. Is UCF still kind of a 50/50 commuter school? From what I've heard about it, it's kind of comparable to the setup that UNC Charlotte has in terms of split down the middle of on-campus students and commuters.

Not really anymore. And I guess it depends on your definition of commuter. There's been a TON of new housing units that have gone up literally next door to the campus (you can see them in this aerial view). The large apartment structures.

I'm willing to bet a vast majority of students can be viewed as the more traditional type (on campus, affiliated housing, or very nearby independent)

I think I read an article somewhere that stated UCF has the most "beds" on campus than any other university in the state of Florida. Take that as you will.

Well the undergrads are 43% on campus and there is lots of housing outside of campus. That is not a commuter school.

I wasn't being snotty just giving info. That's the problem with the internet you lose 70% of all communication conveyed through inflection and body language

The number of parking lots and parking garages make it hard not to call it a commuter school.

I think schools like UCF, USF, FIU, etc will always be called commuter schools, regardless of other factors, because they are built on their own land and don't allow outside development in unlike UF, FSU, etc where they are built within a grid system where it is difficult to tell where the university ends and the city begins. Schools that reside in a urban setting often rely on the city infrastructure for parking. I personally like the UCF model but to each their own.

This huge student apartment and retail complex is opening next month right across the street from one of the main entrances to campus.

There are now 5 New student complexes built across from UCF entrances over the last 2-3 years.

Guess these are "commuter students" to some.

Very interesting. A suburban feel, not urban at all.

It would be like if the University of Houston was built in the Woodlands or Kingwood.

The difference is the school was smart enough to buy enough land to develop and young enough to be able to acquire it. Unlike other schools we don't require two years without vehicles. Remember you have 28k students commuting (undergraduate) and over 21k living on campus. Most public universities have a total enrollment averaging 28k. There is going to be parking on campus. That is not commuter status. Again we have more on campus than most universities have enrolled

More than 45,000 students attend the main campus and there are less than 14,000 parking spots for them. Sure it looks like a lot of parking but when you grow exponentially, so does your campus.

I lived in the Towers with 3 other roommates and all 4 of us had cars. None of us were from the area (2 from FLL-MIA, 2 from Naples).
