What last years 2013 (16 team) college playoff would have looked like:
* denotes automatic qualifiers for conference champions

(1) Florida St.* (13-0)
(16) ULL * (8-4)

(2) Auburn* (12-1)
(15) Bowling Green * (10-3)

(3) Alabama (11-1)
(14) Rice * (10-3)

(4) Michigan St.* (12-1)
(13) Fresno St.* (11-1)

(5) Stanford* (11-2)
(12) UCF* (11-1)

(6) Baylor (11-1)
(11)Oklahoma St. (10-2)

(7) Ohio State (12-1)
(10) Oregon (10-2)

(8) Missouri (11-2)
(9) South Carolina (10-2)

Bubble teams left out: Arizona St. (10-3), Clemson (10-2), Louisville (11-1), Duke (10-2), Northern Illinois (12-1)

That would have been fun to watch!!!!!

Yes they would, but would any network want to televise 20 of those games to get to broadcast the 1 time the big upset occurs?

Big names draw viewers and the playoffs would be worth a lot less to media companies if all G5 champs were included.

Quo you make a good point and i see where you are coming from, but I still think 16 team a play-off format with automatic conference qualifiers would generate A LOT of fan interest. I love it when my team (ECU) trounces a little guy. It is fun to hang 70 on a team and show them they don't belong 03-wink

Go with 14 teams give the top four teams a bye and make the bottom 4 teams "play in"... After the play in there are 12, after round 1 there are 8.... Then you reseed and do an eight team playoff...

Eh, Many networks are willing to televise Fl. State trounce teams like Wake Forest and Boston College every year in the ACC. At least ULL was a conference champ.

The NCAA tournament makes games like the MEAC championship worth televising. It will have the same effect on games that ESPN and other outlets already own, like the CUSA championship game.

Let's face it: Nobody watches the Atlantic Sun and MEAC title games. When ESPN has that "championship week" it knows it is offering casual viewing. People are gearing up for tournament action and so a bar or two will flip this stuff on a background noise, and it still gets marginal ratings and ESPN derives marginal revenue from it. It beats showing a 30/30 re-run for the 29th time.

Similarly, I doubt anyone will watch a UT-Arlington/Arkansas State SBC title game just because the winner gets to play #2 FSU in the CFP. The interest will be marginal.

I just don't think we can get around this fact: Would CBS or ESPN rather show #12, SEC 3rd place LSU vs #2 FSU or unranked, SBC champion UT-Arlington vs #2 FSU? Which will they pay the massive dollars for?

I'll put it this way. 2 years ago, during the regular NCAA basketball season no one cared about or to watch Florida Gulf Coast play on TV. But as soon as that 15 seed knocked off a 2 seed in the tournament, I bet more people tuned in to watch their next round game on TV more than the other power schools like lets say Michigan versus Baylor for example.

Yes, but how often will a #2 Alabama lose to a #15 UT-Arlington? Once every 20 years?

So the network will figure it has to endure awful ratings for 20 of those games for every one magic upset it gets.

And I bet that even when the once a generation occurs and UT-Arlington beats Alabama and then faces Ohio State in the quarterfinals, the ratings will still be lower than if it was Ohio State - Alabama.

RE: USA Today Article: Power 5 conferences get what they want in NCAA governance proposal
You can't compare the NCAA Basketball Tournament to the FBS system. Why in the world would the P5 ever support a 16 team. With the system now the P5 are guaranteed nearly 70% of their teams in the bowl post season.

ACC has 9-10 bowl spots a year.
SEC has 10 bowl spots a year
B10 has 9 bowl slots
B12 has 7 bowl slots
P12 has 7 bowl slots

With a 16 team playoff, the bowls would basically be dead. P5 bowl payouts dwarf the G5 bowl payouts. Why would ESPN kill the bowls they just bought? People can dream of a 16 team playoff, but as long as the P5 conferences have 70% of their teams going to the post season, they will never vote for it.

I don't think anyone around here thinks a 16-team playoff is likely, at least not in the next 15 years.

agree

it's like the ncaa tourney when the 1 plays the 16...I NEVER watch that game because it's always a blue blood type beating the crud out of a low major team.

Yes, and the difference is, when there is a 1/16 game during the NCAA tourney, there are also usually 2-3 other games going on at the same time, so the network knows that tons of people will still be watching the overall coverage even if the 1/16 is tuned out.

But in a 16-team playoff, each game would be played alone, would have to be appealing to viewers in and of itself, so the network couldn't count on other games at the same time to carry it that way.

yup...in a 16 game playoff with the 16 teams being conference winners there just aren't enough games in total to warrant three or four "first round blowouts" between a Bama vs a Bowling Green.

RE: USA Today Article: Power 5 conferences get what they want in NCAA governance proposal
I honestly think a 12-team CFP would work. 10 champs plus 2 at large. Round 1 is played the second weekend of December and features 5 v. 12, 6 v. 11, 7 v. 10, and 8 v. 9.

#12 ULL v. #5 Stanford, at Palo Alto, California
#11 Bowling Green v. #6 Baylor, at Waco, Texas
#10 Rice v. #7 Ohio St., at Columbus, Ohio
#9 Fresno St. v. #8 UCF, at Orlando, Florida

Not a home run slate, but there would be football games to watch, so people would tune in and the TV networks would pay. The (21) Fresno St. v. (15) UCF game would have been a great game. And, had Northern Illinois not folded, at least two of the Round 1 games would have had immense excitement.

Round 2, played just before Christmas in the December 20-23 timeframe would be amazing - and every conference would have a chance at the national championship to add the Cinderella factor:

#8 UCF v. #1 Florida St., at Tallahassee, Florida
#7 Ohio St. v. #2 Auburn, at Auburn, Alabama
#6 Baylor v. #3 Alabama, at Tuscaloosa, Alabama
#5 Stanford v. #4 Michigan St., at E. Lansing, Michigan

Then, you spill into the New Year's 6 bowl games, as currently structured. But, you would probably add a couple extra bowl games for the Round 1 losers, to be played in the December 27-29 timeframe - Las Vegas and New Orleans Bowls would make sense, IMO.
