This is a big story for Red Wing fans, fans of sports and entertainment which can be hosted in a large arena and for the city of Detroit.

Presumably the arena is but one of a number of buildings which will be built or rehabbed in the so-called entertainment zone.

Here are the plans. They are incredibly grand, with a state of the art arena, to be built mostly below ground (so as not overwhelm the rest of the neighborhood), plenty of new housing ringing the arena, etc. etc.

Between the Palace and this arena there will be plenty of dates to fill.

I'll bet in say 5 years we see the NCAA basketball tourney play say opening round games there. I can see MSU and maybe even UofM play a game annually there. Or even doubleheaders with teams like EMU, CMU, Oakland, UDM in a MAC-Horizon clash doubleheader.
