Duplantier having great summer
Jon Duplantier threw six more shutout innings tonight with 10 Ks and NO walks. He only allowed three hits. He's leading his team (Santa Barbara Foresters) and league in wins and strikeouts. He was the starting pitcher in this week's All-Star game and had a 1-2-3 inning.

Let's hope he doesn't lose the strike zone on the way home from ca

While we are talking Santa Barbara Foresters, Ford Stainback is having a heck of a summer out there. 8 game hit streak, a double in each of the last 4. Hitting .342 with a .468 OBP and a .421 SLG in 94 PA out there. Good to see and hopefully he can keep it up into next season.

Thanks for posting that Guy. I had a chance to meet Jon before a game at UTSA and he was a really nice young man. His mom and dad taught him well.

RE: Duplantier having great summer
Kevin McCanna named Pitcher of the Week in the Cape (now 5-2 with 2.84 ERA) for the Summer after a strong bounceback effort (following two poor starts).

Evan Rutter now with 5 saves, 2.06 ERA, 18:1 K:BB ratio.

Connor Teykl and Ford Stainback continue to tear up the California College League. Ford is amongst the league-leaders in AVG (.354) and stolen bases (9), while Connor, who was hitting in just the .220's only 3 weeks ago, is en fuego, raising his AVG up to .318, with surprising pop (8 doubles, 2 HRs).

Jon D. with first poor outing of the Summer last night-- not surprisingly, coinciding with a loss of control...

6.0 IP, 5 hits, 3 runs, 4 BBs, 1 WP, 4 Ks

...wonder if he's hit the proverbial wall, and time to shut it down.

And even with that, not a horrible start at all.

Also, Ford Stainback is hitting over .400 for the summer. Just smoking hot right now.

As is Connor Teykl. With regards to Jon, he was never hit hard during the regular season, as reflected in his BAA .229 BAA. The issue was always his intermittent and oftentimes sudden total loss of his command. He'd throw 3 lights out innings, then come into the 4th inning unable to throw strikes, and being forced to groove balls. Prior to last night's game, this had not been an issue this Summer. This mental aspect (or consistency in his mechanics) is the only thing holding him back from being a truly elite college pitcher.

I never understood why Wayne didn't just keep telling Jon it was the 3rd inning. #threeinningsandacloudofdust

Outstanding bounceback game for Jon:

W, 6-2, 7.0 IP, 4 hits, 1 run, 2 BBs, 9 Ks (102 pitches - 66 strikes).

He still needs to improve his strikes:BBs ratio, but still, a really strong outing.

RE: Duplantier having great summer
Neptune Beach in the California League ended it's Summer yesterday (as our guys on the Santa Barbara Forresters move on in the winners bracket). However, after struggling his first several weeks (with his AVG hovering around the .230 mark), Connor Teykl ended the Summer en fuego, raising his final stats to outstanding levels...

35 games, 137 ABs, .343/.404/.489, with 3 HRs, 1 triple, 9 doubles, 27 RBIs

The only negative was his 26 strikeouts to only 13 free passes.

Great Summer and very encouraging signs for our likely starting 3B next season! 04-cheers

Also for Neptune and also very encouraging...

Evan Rutter: 13 games, 0-1, 6 saves, 17.1 IP, 1.53 ERA, .148 BAA, 0.635 WHIP, 9 hits, 22 Ks, 2 BBs

Ryan McCarthy: 12 games, 1-1, 21.2 IP, 2.08 ERA, .233 BAA, 1.20 WHIP, 18 Ks, 6 BBs

We really need Connor T to step up offensively next season. Great to see he did just that over the summer. I'm still scratching my head a bit on where next season's offense is going to come from. Probably will require one of the newcomers (Gray, Brewer, Myers, Chandler, etc) to produce as a freshman.

Reeves is a given, and if he can get healthy, what can only envision the numbers he can produce (given how productive he was this past season playing two-thirds of the year with a fractured wrist and leg injury). STainback and Teykl both had exceptional Summers, and Taylor and Kopycinski are having very good Summers, albeit with weaker competition. The guy we really need to step up and have a breakout season is Leon Byrd, and he's certainly capable of it. And, yes, we need to have Gray and Brewer have impact seasons as true Freshmen.

Dominent outing by Kevin McCanna tonight in what might have been his last start of the Summer in the Cape...

W, 7-2, 8.0 IP, 5 hits, 1 run, 1 BB, 6 Ks, 100 pitches/70 strikes

RE: Duplantier having great summer
Big Jon ended his Summer season on a high note as the winning pitching in the championship game, giving the Santa Barbara Forresters yet another NBC title...

W, 6-2, 5.0 IP, 5 hits, 1 run, 0 BBs, 5 Ks

...with the runs scoring on a hit off John Williamson in the top of the 6th inning, after Jon gave up singles to the first two batters.

JWillie pitched two shutout innings for the hold after surrendering the run-scoring hit.

Very strong and encouraging Summers by Duplantier, McCanna, McCarthy, Rutter and Williamson.

If Jordan Stephens is healthy and regains his form, and this NJ-based JUCO southpaw is as good as advertised, we'll have five elite starters (including Fox)....and that does not even count our two stud incoming Freshmen. And with Ditman, Teykl and Rutter anchoring the bullpen, with McCarthy, Oreweiler, Williamson and McKelligott providing support...Wow! Can't wait!

Pitching has never been our weakness. I am worried about our hitting. I hope Berkman can bring them around

Pitching has never been our weakness, but there have been years it has not been a particular strenght either. Next year's staff has the potential, experience and depth to be truly historic, even by Rice standards. A truly elite pitching staff can carry even a weak hitting team to a CWS title, as Augie and UT have proven.
