LB Coach Resigns
Ulrick Edmonds has resigned as LB coach 7 months after being hired to take a job with NC State. His wife is an assistant coach with the WBB team there. DC Nagy will also serve as LB coach this season.

I understand the decision to be closer to his wife but man... what a crazy amount of shake-up the football program has experienced in the last few months.

What that sucks is we play NcSt and they now have our playbook and know a ton about the team.

We picked up another former asst coach from UConn with Darrell Perkins, to coach the CBs.

Yeah, I agree with DaBig...moving right on to nc state this close to the season is kinda rough...maybe put in his release a clause that he couldn't coach at state til next season? More motivation for the boys for that game?

RE: LB Coach Resigns
To me, a coach leaving in mid-July (and seven months after being hired) is one heck of a lot worse (ethically) than a 17-year-old rising senior reopening his recruitment after having made an oral committment. This is just not right, even given his circumstances, and I for one am big-time p.o.ed.

EDIT: This ranks right up there with cancelling a game a couple of months before the season starts.

+1. Let's not waste any more time criticizing 18 year olds.

RE: LB Coach Resigns
I responded before reading the article that Harry wrote. Now that I am aware of the Perkins hire, I am losing some of the initial sting that I felt. I also read the article on the ODUsports.com (football), and it gave much more detail on Perkins' background. If he can really help our cornerbacks, this may turn out to be a really good turn of events. In today's pass happy version of American football, the defensive back/cornerback coach is actually one of the most important position coaches on the staff. From what I was able to read, we have stepped up in that area with this hire, and my attitude has gone from p.o.ed to "hmm, maybe not a bad move at all!"

Cheers, all.

Indeed! 01-ncaabbs

I would probably go where my wife was too.
However, this may be a huge career risk for him.
"Unspecified" is not an assistant coordinator or even an assistant position coach. It is likely he will be involved in recruiting.

Edmonds has yet to get his feet wet as an FBS coach, and although he is by all accounts an outstanding recruiter, his being placed as LBc for ODU was VERY questionable, IMO.

ODU probably lost a good recruiter, but may end up better off without a very green LB coach.

I'm thinking along the same lines. Yeah it's bad for ODU because they are losing a position coach 6 weeks before the season opener, but it's worse for Edmonds. There's no way that NC State has a coaching position available for him on 7/18. Like you said, he is most likely going to primarily serve as a recruiter for this year. It's definitely a step back for him career-wise. At the same time, I can't be mad at him for wanting to be with his wife. It's just unfortunate that the school he is going to happens to be our opponent in 7 weeks. If it was any other program not on our schedule, no one would care that much.

I like that the new guy has a history of high interception counts and stellar pass efficiency defense. No Fly at Foreman!

I believe Edmonds was the primary recruiter for Kareem McDonald. I wonder if there could have been any connection between his resignation and McDonald's decommit in hopes that an offer would be coming from NC State. Purely speculation, but always fun.

Ive been expecting an offer as well. He was most recently at the Wake Forest Camp.

It makes sense for Nc state to offer McDonald at this point. No offer is almost a sign of a red flag.

Sure enough, according to 247, McDonald has an unofficial scheduled with NC State on 7/25.

Coincidence?

We just need to beat their asses on September 6. Show them both that they made the wrong decision.

A little closer look at Ulrick Edmonds and his decision to leave, and the opportunity it presented for Darrell Perkins.

Didn't know at the time that Edmonds wife, who has been an assistant coach for NC State WBB, was pregnant. That changes everything regarding his decision, IMO. No one who is also a father can fault the guy for wanting to be with his wife when she gave birth and be able to see his child every day. Although I'm disappointed he left because I think he could have been a big asset for ODU when it came to recruiting, I wish him and his family all of the best.
