Heartfelt, touching tweet today from EMU player
Former teammate honors Demarius Reed. Tweet from Darius Scott:

Tweet from #1 Darius Scott - "Just buried reed jersey under our new turf and today makes 9 months since you been gone I swear bro I miss you so much man R.I.P. D.Reed".

Dear Dave,
Very nice idea by Darius Scott. My question would be: Will the jersey remain, if and when a new field is to be laid down? To me it should, but you will always have the passing of time, and people forget or do not care anymore.

I had heard earlier that something was planned for Reed.

It kind of got 'lost' in the gray turf, 'Factory', etc.

Let's hope it is done opening game next month.

One thing I'm wondering about.

They buried his jersey yesterday. Can they now retire it?

The jersey burial is like part of the funeral commitment service where the deceased is buried in a casket. In Reed's case, he was buried in Illinois, but his jersey buried at Rynearson.

In the case of a deceased active player, is burial of the jersey more appropriate then retiring it? (retiring and displaying a game jersey seems most appropriate for a living athlete being honored).

Ken,

I've started to give this more thought.

They could take one of his game jerseys and place it in some type of permanent casing and bury it say at the 50 yard line.

That might be more appropriate then say hanging it in the football building or in the Convo.

It might also have been appropriate to take one of his game jerseys and neatly fold it up and place it within the casket.

I'm sure funeral directors have understanding how to handle things like these which are, thankfully, not common.

I'd guess a lot depends on the wants of the family. They may have ideas about how Reed's game jerseys should be handled (e.g., buried, given to the family and kept, etc.).

This would be a smart move by Heather and her staff to include the family in a ceremony. Maybe the 1st game of the year.

They've already memorialized his locker. It's sealed off with plexiglass with a giant photo of him in his jersey inside.

Retiring #2 would be fitting since it's hard to envision anyone else wearing it.
