I have had several relatives and friends who have searched all over to find a school that has a music business program. One had to go to Oklahoma State and the other had to go to Southern Miss. Again with the musical heritage in Memphis, music should offer a lot more at the university.

It will include a 1,200-seat performance hall, a stage and the latest audio and acoustic technology. ... The Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music offers bachelor’s through doctoral degrees in 29 areas of concentration, and offers the only doctoral program in music in Tennessee. More than 400 students from around the country and from more than 24 countries are currently enrolled in the school.

In late June, the University of Memphis announced plans for a $62 million recreation and fitness center on campus..."

With the musical heritage of Memphis, the University of Memphis should have the best music facilities and the best freakin marching band in the land.

Or at least play music associated with that heritage instead of the same songs & arrangements 100 other marching bands are playing

What they SHOULD have is complete marching band facilities built into an on-campus stadium.

The football team trains and practices off-campus. Integrating marching band facilities with an on-campus stadium would allow the band to use the facilities on a regular basis. We could have the best equipped marching band facility in the nation for a few million dollars on top of the OCS cost.

If we had that, we could attract students and faculty from all over the country. Our marching band would become one of the best in the nation in literally a few short years.

An instant national standing is there for the taking, but I forgot. The Liberty Bowl is such a great deal for us.

If only our leadership had the tiniest amount of vision.

Why is this so hard to understand? Want respect? OCS! Want to improve recruiting? OCS!
SMU used the Cotton Bowl for many years until it aged out and everyone but high schools pretty much quit using it and then they built their own OCS. That campus is quite small but, like SMU, schools can find room if the politics are right.

They didn't look very hard since U of M has one.....unless maybe it was back in the 90's. The music business program has been around for years.

With over 1,000 songs with Memphis in the title and the Sun, Stax, Hi catalogs; any of us could put together a decade of quality and entertaining half time shows.

I love my university and my city as much as anything not Jesus or family related; but every time I see MTSU's band perform before ours, I'm embarrassed. They absolutely dwarf us.

I know where they were 20 years ago and I know where we were 20 years ago and someone's been asleep at the wheel.

Well if our band director is not related to the governor, fire him and hire someone that wants to work. It takes a lot of effort to build a program, including a marching band. There should be a long line outside his/her office of folks willing and able to best his efforts. One thing alums should never experience is embarrassment of their band at a game.

From my limited understanding of things they eliminated non music majors from participating and also cut the merger financial aid to MSOS members to zero. It looks pretty intentional to this old man sitting in the stands and remembers a 225 member MSOS. I was mortified in 2003 when a sub 100 piece band came out of the tunnel before the first game. It was a sad joke and has not gotten much better since then

I'm sure they looked at Memphis if they were doing their homework, but those were the two schools they decided on.

There is a Music Business degree with two concentrations available - music business & recording technology.

The university used to have its own record label - high water records. Don't know if that's just something that's gone dormant and could be dusted back off and used again or not

Awesome to hear that.

I remember hearing about a music fest that sounded like it was university-related (Blue Tom Festival or something? Thought it was held in Cooper Young). Don't know if it was just a one-year thing. But, as I said, it's critical for Memphis' music scene, especially because money is in writing more than it is in performing.

On a related note, I've heard that the music school downtown is seeing a decent amount of growth.

Visible music college?

Yep, I recall bizjournals or someone mentioning an expansion. They may be opening a Chicago campus and have actively hosted European (London?) students. Also, one of those American Idol or the Voice contestants was from Visible.

With that, and the Stax Academy, and the Slim House, and the merger of the Music Commission and Consortium MMT, perhaps Rhodes and CBU need to step up (or already have)? While that's impressive from where we started in the 80s, this needs to be the new start, the new baseline, that pales in comparison to a future where songwriters are grown, welcome, and stay here. Some are moving here like the folks from Deering and Down, who always impress me whenever I hear them.

Don't be. My son and all of his music friends (one of whom he graduated high school with actually was in the MTSU band) all agree that MTSU's band is big...... and HORRIBLE. Lots of "park and bark". No musicianship. Not very sophisticated.

You may be talking about brister Fest - a kid named jack started his own music festival and company called "brister street productions" while he lived in a triplex on brister. I think his undergrad is in philosophy. His idea was a local band only festival loosely tied to the UofM and he started it while he was in school.

It's now a multi-year event and jack's company "brister street productions" is involved in all kinds of events and booking including Thursdays squared at Overton.

There is a blue tom fest but it is held beside the fieldhouse. Last year Star and Micey was the headliner.
