So ... Looks like ol' Teke will be going into a surgical theater July 28th. 80% tear of the rotator cuff.

03-banghead
I've had 2 cortisone shots in the right shoulder in the past 3 months and the MRI finally confirmed the tear. It's frustrating too ... because I'm playing the best golf of the year, even with the tear ......

Anyone on here ever had the repair??? If so ... what was the result ??

( yeah, I know that PT is critical and I'm all about that. )

I'm hearing 5-6 weeks in a sling and NO lifting for 3-4 months.

Never had it so I can't speak to the recovery, but your timing seems a bit off. Shouldn't you complete the golf season and go under the knife around October? That would give you a sold 7 months to recover before next spring.

RE: OT: Surgery Sucks !!!
I had the rotator surgery, along with repairing my AC joint and destroyed labrum. All at the same time. (thank you JMU baseball!)

Had it done two years ago and it's not fun. I had mine done via laparoscopic procedure (three point insertion) and one small open incision to remove large spurs.

Recovery was about what you said though longer on the lifting/athletics thing. It was about two months in a sling (again, mine was a bit different) and almost a year (about 8 months) for lifting/basketball/golf.

One strong piece of advice. Get off of the muscle relaxers as soon as possible and absolutely don't over-medicate with those. You will get the absolute worst case of constipation you can imagine as your intestines don't operate normally when on those drugs. Something about inhibiting the nature muscle motion in the upper and lower GI. Just some words of wisdom.

The outcome was great even though there is still some clicking in there. Playing some of the best golf of my life right now. No crazy side effects... just make sure you stay with the PT.

RE: OT: Surgery Sucks !!!
LOL ... I had to sit down and plan out the next 12 months to see when it was "convenient" to be an invalid. So .. this was where it fit ... I did this last Dec hand splitting 4 cords of firewood ... so, as it works out ... "the sooner, the better" .... I'm really not taking any meds right now. Dr. is amazed ... because I should be in pain. Guess I'm one of those people that has a high threshold. It aches at night - especially in the am ... and for a day or two after golf ... even then ... not too bad. I'm concerned I'll complete the tear and then face atrophied muscles, etc. Now, I don't have any of that to deal with ... shoulder muscles are large and hard ... I'm a big believer in PT and stick to the plan ... I may take an Rx for pain the first couple days ... but will not be using those if possible. I just don't like meds ..... at all. I was just curious about "range of motion" ....... and Re-attachment results ...

My golf season starts in March ... and an extended trip to Myrtle Beach the first week in May .... I want to be as completely healed as I can be by then ..

I've even been practicing eating with my left hand ... so far, I haven't put my eye out ... or stuck myself in the head ...

I hope all goes well Larry. Modern medicine is pretty amazing.
If were from a different century, you'd have a useless stump.

Ouch...hope it goes well and you heal up soon. It's not the arm you high-five w/ after TDs is it?

And look at the bright side- it'll shorten up the golf swing and you'll be more consistent.

RE: OT: Surgery Sucks !!!
Surgery does suck, but I'm thankful that I am alive at a time when it is available rather than having to spend the balance of my life in pain. You are right about PT being of utmost importance to recovery. I just had a total hip replacement on 6/4, and nothing during the entire process was as bad as the previous year. Good luck, and have a speedy recovery.

RE: OT: Surgery Sucks !!!
Best of luck TEKE, you'll be back to bourbon, chicken and grinnin' soon enough. I've done a couple knees and a hip and yea it sucks to hear "12 months", "6 months", even 3 weeks, but it does seem to fly by. I'll be up for a bicep tear, I fear, soon enough (ain't this getting old schit great?), but I figure it sure beats the alternative.

Just remember, if you lay off the meds (as advised above) you can be back to "what you do" that much quicker. Hope to see you this Fall.

JMUTEKE

Best of luck with your upcoming surgery and I hope it goes well.

I had a case of frozen shoulder a few years back and did 10 weeks of PT before having it "operated" on. For those of you
that don't know what this involves they put you under, grab your arm and yank and twist to break up all the
adhesion's. The Doc said when he did it to my shoulder it sounded like a bowl of Rice Krispies when you pour on the milk.

I then did another 12 weeks of PT. Got back about 75% of the range of motion, still bothers me

PT is very important in coming back from shoulder issues. So I hope you stick to it and work it out well. Unfortunately for me after about 5 weeks
or so the PT did nothing for me. Never got back that last 25%. But it is a hell of a lot better than it was before, couldn't lift my arm higher than my chest!!

Getting old s***s.

Hope all goes well.

Brian

Teke..you'll be just fine.. It should be done outpatient with a scope. You'll be in a immobilizer for a few weeks and then good as new. No more tossing a turning with a good nights sleep.

I had complete reconstruction on torn labrum, rotator, capsular shift and 6 anchors thanks to an ill spent youth. Thanks to a 52 week rehab and Dr. James Andrews some years ago.

Keep in mind you should be able to chip and putt much sooner than you will be able to make full swings. I expect your short game will be in top form by the time you get to myrtle.

RE: OT: Surgery Sucks !!!
Rotator cuff is a tricky one. It's four muscles, so depending on which are damaged and to what severity, recovery can vary. I "strained" (maybe tore) my right rotator cuff serving in tennis one year, and without medical attention (I did not realize the damage done at the time) I was out 4-6 months before I could throw anything beyond 10-15 feet overhand. It took a full year for me to be able to play tennis or throw a ball full strength. I adapted my serve adding more spin to reduce the wear on my shoulder and have never had an issue since.

Don't rush back, rest & recovery are all part of the process. Patience is hard. JMUETC is likely right about your short game improving. It might be worth it to invest in some private lessons to recapture or adapt your golf swing once you've healed.

Good luck!!

RE: OT: Surgery Sucks !!!
yeso ... it's the upper/top ligament ... muscle is still "strong" hasn't atrophied as of yet (Luckily, it's still "partly" attached) ... injury was an "overhead" move (just like tennis serve) ... I'm not going to push it ... I'll be bored but I'll learn patience. It's the only "right shoulder" I have ... lol.

On top of all that ... I stopped smoking 6 days ago!!!! Lets face it .... I'm in a cranky ass mood ... My wife has been staying away from me ... even the cat and dog have avoided me. But ... I got this !!!! 04-rock

Well now that you have a medical reason you might be able to legally score some pot in DC. Just sayin...
