This doesn't even take into account the regular meal plan that they will get... College sports is getting too out of hand for me. http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com...-athletes/

I hate Shabaz Napier for that "I'm hungry" crap.

These kids deserve all the food they can get. They do put in a LOT of hours practicing and working out and burn through far more calories than other students. And they are required to as a condition of their scholarship.

What's more, the public also almost surely disagrees with you. Napier's comment struck a powerful tone, which is why the NCAA suddenly was able to allow an open table after 11 years of "studying the issue".

Bottom line: The AAC cannot blunder in to the trap of opposing things like freely available food for athletes. The public will view that position very unfavorably and it will make us look bad and the P5 look good.

I used to manage a hotel that the Texas football team stayed at the night before home games. Before the season, they would drop off 10 pallets of Gatorade and about 20 pallets of other snacks/drinks. I would imagine just that stuff alone would cost over 100k.

They already get free meal plans and Gatorade after practice, if they can't make the caf's hours during season due to practices they usually have dining dollars built into their meal plans for on campus eating venues. The players eat better than any student does already.

I understand that they burn calories but all of this "for the player" banter isn't because the schools really care for the players. Its just for the administrators to point to and say look, we conceded this to you. We're on your side. (As they wheel their money printing machine into the closet)

The schools are trying to give as little as possible to satiate the players so they won't continue to get sued and risk losing the industry completely.

Really, the money that's being harvested shouldn't go to the players, or the administrators, or the NCAA. It should go to help the nation's higher education system. Increasing school funding, teacher pay, and for lowering tuition cost so less of the nation has to come out of college in debt. And then, maybe some of the kids who are having to play ball for their scholarship, might not have to in the future if they could start to afford school.

Keep in mind that the jerseys still have a SCHOOL's name emblazoned across the front. If these kids want to be payed then someone needs to form a successful semi-pro league that isn't school affiliated and they can get payed and (hopefully) pay for an education on their own for when they blow out their knees or break their backs.

Of course they aren't doing it for the players. The NCAA had the open-table proposal on hold for 11 years before Napier complained and put the media spotlight on it then suddenly boom, open table. Obviously, the NCAA and P5 are doing it as window dressing to push their deeper agenda.

But the point that keeps being missed is despite the impure motivation, stuff like open tables really does benefit the players, and thus fighting it is a losing battle in the public domain.

1,500 is more than I spent on ALL my food in 1 semester, without a meal plan.

Do you live in Los Angeles? Do you burn 10,000 calories a day?

Did you add anything to the university besides tuition? Don't feel bad neither did I?

Without students paying tuition, there wouldn't be a university.

Which is why I am not angry that athletes get full scholarships when half of them really aren't smart enough to be in college.

Not true. The vast majority of funding for most schools comes from research, IIRC. Public schools in California didn't charge tuition until Reagan was governor, and Rice was free until they decided to integrate. I'm sure there are other examples, too.

Both of those systems ended in or before the 80's because they weren't sustainable.

Research grants, while sizeable generally aren't for public use by the university, they are almost always tied to the research that companies want conducted and they tend to help graduate programs more than undergraduate. (They do help keep proffesors around however)

I would argue that the universities' endowment funds (and investment portfolios) provide the greatest usable income for the university. The endowments can be used for actual facilities, courses, administration, etc. And it's the years and years of tuition payments and alumni donations that have provided capital for those university investments.

If it were me running the show, the government would stipulate a mandatory percentage of endowment spending per year in years or significant growth to the funds (not in years of loss such as during the recent financial crisis) this mandatory spending is already in place for most non-profits but the schools have finagled their way around it and are growing their endowments substantially without putting any significant amounts towards actual higher education.
