I grew- up in Elk River area; it's nice. I currently live in the Nitro- Cross Lanes area (Cross Lanes has a lot of traffic but the houses are mostly nice). The entire area between Huntington and Charleston is convenient (to CUSA sports) and affordable. There are many nice areas; the best place to live would depend on where you would be working. Teays Valley, Hurricane, Winfield, Scott Depot area would be my first choice if you would be working in the western part of the area. I have lived in Huntington/ Charleston area for 52 years; I'd be happy to advise you.

If you move to Poca and send your kids to the high school there, they'd be Poca Dots.

Never really understood why West Virginians expect other people to mispronounce a common word due to the accent. I've never pronounced it HurriCUN. Of course I've lived in WV since 1998 and still get "the eye" when people hear me talk and the common phrases like "you ain't from around here are you"? Which is always with the look of disapproval or untrusting stare.

It's actually just a West Virginia pronunciation of "hollow", as in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. There are a number of definitions for the word, and as used in this discussion, that defintion is well down the list.

I think the more full definition given by MUsince96 is likely right on the mark for the usage in West Virginia.
