RE: Very OT: Need Some Help from our Marshall Brethren
I grew- up in Elk River area; it's nice. I currently live in the Nitro- Cross Lanes area (Cross Lanes has a lot of traffic but the houses are mostly nice). The entire area between Huntington and Charleston is convenient (to CUSA sports) and affordable. There are many nice areas; the best place to live would depend on where you would be working. Teays Valley, Hurricane, Winfield, Scott Depot area would be my first choice if you would be working in the western part of the area. I have lived in Huntington/ Charleston area for 52 years; I'd be happy to advise you.

If you move to Poca and send your kids to the high school there, they'd be Poca Dots.

I could not find a similar site for Teays Valley or Winfield, but both are nice areas. I have lived in Hurricane and Winfield, both are nice areas with nice developments and communities. Milton has some nice new developments, but it is closer to Barboursville/Huntington than Charleston.

Another factor: Hurricane and Teays are right off of the interstate; Winfield takes about a 5-10 minute drive to reach the interstate.

(also, if anyone is wondering, its Hurr-i-cun, not hurr-i-cane, haha)

Never really understood why West Virginians expect other people to mispronounce a common word due to the accent. I've never pronounced it HurriCUN. Of course I've lived in WV since 1998 and still get "the eye" when people hear me talk and the common phrases like "you ain't from around here are you"? Which is always with the look of disapproval or untrusting stare.

You live up thuh holler?

He was the Governor of VIRGINIA not WV since we were Virginia in 1805

I've heard my family members use this word my entire life. I'm almost 28 now and still don't really know what it means.

A holler is a narrow valley between two steep hills often with a stream running through it. Usually one way in and out.

Thanks. I always suspected it was a mountain valley just based on the descriptions of the areas, but I didn't know the rest of that.

It's actually just a West Virginia pronunciation of "hollow", as in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. There are a number of definitions for the word, and as used in this discussion, that defintion is well down the list.

noun
8.
an empty space within anything; a hole, depression, or cavity.

9.
a valley: They took the sheep to graze in the hollow.

I think the more full definition given by MUsince96 is likely right on the mark for the usage in West Virginia.

Well the application for the job has been sent. Next part is to wait to see if I get an interview. If A and B lead to C, then I'll use this as a basis to look for housing. First renting then owning.
