Was reading on the GS forum that during an interview (can't remember who) said it was in theory possible for a G5 team to be selected. Yes, you would have to play a brutal OOC schedule, but that is kinda the point. If you earn a top 4 ranking then you are eligible. Now I'm sure the P5 voters will influence the polls and rankings to make sure that doesn't happen, but still.
Boise almost pulled this off a couple of times, but choked at the end. So if you are willing to play the top 10 teams in the nation in a single year and the SBC is really strong that year and you go undefeated, then you have a chance.
insert Dumb and Dumber gif here.
If/when the playoffs expand then the chances could become a reality, but apparently there is no push to expand for another 12 years.

Isn't that kind of a catch 22? You have to play a brutal OOC schedule, but no decent p5 teams want to play us because they too have to have a strong schedule? Will be fun to watch this play out the next couple of years. I'll be damned if they pick an undefeated G5 over a 1 loss SEC/ACC/PAC12.
um no. Several times on this board it has been said that there isn't even a chance for a G5 to get into the new playoffs. Well there is, not likely but still a chance.
Also, schedules are made years in advance and you never know who will be up or down that year. We schedule top 10 teams all the time. Maybe we schedule an ACC, SEC, Big10, and ranked G5 team in one year. I don't mind having to play a tough schedule to prove you are a top team (everyone does has to do it even the P5 teams), but if you are ranked number 3 or 4 in the nation then you get to go to the playoffs.

Only problem is that a selection committee, with little G5 representation picks the4 teams. Not a computer system using a collaboration of polls.
In the 16 years of the BCS, a G5 program finished in the top 4 once. When Boise State finished #3 and TCU #4, the two played each other in a bowl.

I think there's a better chance than many realize for a G5 to get in, but there will likely need to be very little that can be quibbled with on the schedule, i.e. probably no FCS games, at least two games against well-known or good-this-year P5 opponents, and (of course) no losses. Heck, I think UCF might have challenged for a playoff spot last year if they had ended up undefeated, and they didn't even go into the year on folks' radar like Boise, TCU, and Utah have done in the past.

Exactly, and unlike the lotto you and the program can influence the odds. Yes it would be very difficult, but I wouldn't want a 8-4 G5 champ to get an auto bid over a 12-1 runner-up of another conference. It makes no sense. You put the BEST teams in. So if GS have 4 ranked teams OOC scheduled one year and go undefeated and get ranked #4 then they would deserve to be in the playoffs.

I think its possible at this point for the AAC or maybe MWC but even then you would have to likely play 3 P5 OOC games to get any SOS respect. The G5 program that makes it will not be G5 for long.
Yea, but there will be hell to pay if a G5 with a credible schedule ends the year undefeated the playoffs consists of a bunch of 2 loss teams. Or worse, is won by a two loss team.

Credibility of the playoff - gone.
Not nearly enough people will care about an undefeated G5 snub.

I don't believe for a second that we go half that long without expansion, I'llbe surprised if we haven't expanded to at least six teams(byes for top two) within five years.
