I wish ECU would do this. All we need to do is find a guy with at least 2 top recruit sons at close ages. Hire him for a 2-3 year contract and then get rid of him if he sucks. Rinse and repeat

That doesn't make it right. I'm not saying that my coach is more or less honorable than any other. I'm just saying that the rule needs to be tweaked to where these types of things can't happen anymore.
It is a bit harsh to forbid a father and his sons on the same team. It was fun watching Doug McDermott play for his father, for example.

Yes, but we lost Brandon Stith to ODU because they hired his dad. Stith signed with us and his dad said he wasn't going to coach at the college level and he didn't want to coach his son in college, as few months later ODU hires him as an Assistant. As soon as the season is other Stith transfers to ODU. He went because his dad was there and said as much.

McDermott's father was already a coach at Creighton before his son came... and actually his son transferred in from another school.

I know it doesn't fit the narrative, but Lawson's credentials actually seemed pretty legit compared to most of these situations.

From what I understand Memphis already had the oldest son locked up....this now helps them get the others and dad gets to be part of a major D1 program. It's a win win for everyone. Good for them.

KJ Lawson, his eldest son Class 2015 had already committed to Memphis. One of the Memphis assistants, Robert Kirby is related to the Lawson's as well so the Lawson's were likely to come to Memphis anyway unless the dad took another coaching job somewhere else.

Regarding this, an undefeated state title for Lawson (w/o any of his sons as players) within the highest classification is good enough from where I am sitting.

To be honest, I never see any consistency in football or basketball about who gets to move up from High School coaching to college. It all seems like luck and/or networking.

Former Tiger DaMonn Fuller just won the AA state title at Jackson South Side (runner up in 2013) ... they had two Juniors who are Top 150 players ... one (Chris McNeal, PG) just committed to Western Kentucky. The other (Malik Hicks, PF) will be a good one too. His résumé exceeds quite a few guys who had no college coaching experience who are now assistants.

It is briefly switching gears to football, but I've wondered if the Ruff might consider offering an assistant's job to Richard Morgan, the head coach of Oscar F. Smith High School here in Chesapeake. He always has oodles of talent and has just about achieved all that he could. Players transfer from all over the area to play for him ... not debating the morality of it, but it does say he could probably recruit.

The Pirates have been doing well lately in SE VA recruiting but I would guess that Morgan would really deliver even more.

Lawson is more than qualified for this move to the college game. And Memphis landing 5-star talents is no different than what they have been doing before the hiring. The real question is will Pastner find a way to screw up coaching with all this talent on the roster? You Memphis guys think he is finally turning the corner toward coaching to the level of the talent he has?

It's right on par with paying a kid to come to your school. It happens frequently at our local area high schools that play for state titles year in and year out. It's just BS.

Total BS --- it's paying a third Assistant coach who has, as one of his primary responsibilities, recruiting. Assistant coaches are hired all of the time for their recruiting connections and abilities. Hell, that's why Pastner himself was hired.

Pastner wouldn't have had a son coming into the program who was a top level recruit. If you don't think that the primary reason for his hire was his sons then you're absolutely dumb.

Also, I'm not saying that, if he's such a recruiting guru as you say, that he couldn't be hired. His son's just shouldn't be able to come there if he was hired within a certain amount of time before their high school graduation.

Butthurt?

Yes he is. Haters are going to hate.

It's been a learning process with Pastner, but I think he improves each year. Coaching at Memphis is a tough job. The man is under a microscope.

If you don't think Pastner is improving you must not be watching. At least he doesn't get owned by Harvard smh.

Also with coaching cred ->

...Lawson served as the Hamilton High School boys basketball head coach from 2003 through this past season. During that time, Lawson guided the Wildcats to three Tennessee state playoff appearances (2006, 2008, 2014), two district titles (2006, 2007), two regional crowns (2006, 2014) and one state championship (2006).

His 2006 Hamilton squad posted a perfect 39-0 record on its way to winning the Tennessee state title. That squad is the last from the city of Memphis to post an undefeated record en route to claiming a state title. The 2006 Wildcats finished the season ranked No. 7 in the final USA TodaySuper 25 High School Boys Basketball poll.

Following the 2005-06 season, Lawson was honored as the Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA) Coach of the Year and the Memphis Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Coach of the Year.

Lawson also served as the Hamilton High School athletics director from 2003-08.

“I’m thrilled and grateful for this opportunity,” said Lawson. “I’m looking forward to working with Coach Pastner and his staff to help carry on the great tradition of Tigers basketball.”

That's a tough route to take when you got owned by us by double digits more than once but to each their own. I'm not saying he hasn't improved, but unless your players are overrated he should get more out of them and take them farther than he does.

I don't think people outside of Tennessee realize how competed it is in Memphis and beyond.

03-lmfao ->

Memphis basketball coach Josh Pastner has set into motion a package deal, and not just a package deal but perhaps the packiest package deal of all time -- and I'm hearing crickets. Can you actually hear tumbleweeds? No? Good, because that's what I'm hearing in complaints about this particular package deal.

Nothing.

Tumbleweeds. Crickets. Zero.

So here's where I come riding to the rescue of righteousness. And if it also allows me to be a contrarian, well all the better. Right? I mean, this story, the following column, was meant for me. It's the column I've been waiting my whole self-righteous, contrarian, miserable life to write.

And here it comes:

Tumbleweeds. Crickets. Zero.

Because I got nothing. Not for this package deal. Because there's nothing wrong with it....
