I don't see how methane wouldn't have made an explosion. This is a singed 262' hole that hold a perfectly round shape.

You would need oxygen and heat to cause an explosion. My guess is that it started to melt, then escape through a pathway to the surface, which began to open up the hole, burn like a torch going up while dirt fell in to fill the space where the methane originally was, and the process accelerated as the hole got larger and more methane escaped.

There is apparently a very large quantity of methane at the ocean floor and in tundra areas like this. Countries like India have been looking at ways to harvest methane from the ocean floor as a fuel source.

If you also look at some of the pictures in the article, it's not hard to imagine that many of the very circular bodies of water in the region began in exactly this way.
