Interesting idea. Would never happen but still i think it would help the state.

How would this help the state?

I'll put it in ways you could understand.

It's like one teacher(state government) with 200 kids it's hard to divide up who gets your attention in a state that large and populous. With the split there would be 6 teachers with 33 student each much more manageable

Btw stole to analogy from one of the commenters. Thought it was good though

It wouldn't. All this is going to do is to setoff a million more referendums to get other parts to split off of the parts that vote to split off. Endless fights over the debt. Endless fights over water rights. Potential disruptions to commerce. Pure, unadulterated chaos.

I didn't think they could get beyond 50/50.

Yes democrats gerrymander, but that rate at which they do it is nowhere near how bad republicans abuse it.

This type of thinking isn't unique to California.

Isn't it true that Texas is the only state that can split into new states without congressional approval?

No.

Texas has a lot of myths it likes to continue about itself.

A state legislature must vote to break up. That's why this proposal is silly.

Yeah I know there is a lot of BS surrounding Texas "we were the only state that was once a country" mentality which leads to plenty of incorrect myths. But I am pretty sure that one is legit.

A) it has to to the voters for approval first.

B) If it passes the voters then it goes to the state legislature (Or so I read)

C) If it passe there... then it has to be approved by the US congress.

HOD.. I'm pretty sure that Texas is the only state in the nation that doesn't need Congressional approval if it decides to breaks up (which aint' likely to happen anyway), only state legislative decision to do so.

It's not allowed to secede from the US to form it's own country, that's the one that's the myth.

Why do that, isn't Mexico just going to take over the Western United States
per La Raza. Guess they want reparations also.

RE: Billionaire proposes California Split
While California is dysfunctional and too big geographically, a split at this modern time invites way too much corruption and costly change. Pass. We don't need to spend more money on more government in a state struggling with what it has already.

RE: Billionaire proposes California Split
Here is the answer to that Texas myth...

There was a provision to split the state up related to the compromise of 1850 but the article is superceded today by the standard constitutional provision.

So, the answer is that it was true at one point in time, the mid 1800s but is no longer true.

This would create a new richest (silicon valley) and poorest (central california) state in the Nation. Although the Mississippi would be running neck and neck central california.
