Memphis-Houston basketball rivalry
Not really, but few teams have played spoiler to Memphis more often over the last 20 years than Houston, costing them at least two NCAA tournament bids and a top-5 ranking in 1996. And Clyde Drexler, THE COACH, was 2-0 in Memphis.

RE: Memphis-Houston basketball rivalry
In my opinion, this is the most disappointing (should be) rivalry from C-USA.
With Louisville, Cincinnati, Memphis, Marquette, Charlotte, Saint Louis, and Memphis- Who would have guessed that Houston would have slept as long as they have. Houston had the "Dream Team". Houston was playing the nation's best teams in C-USA. I would have thought Houston would have built like SMU is currently building.
It isn't because Houston hasn't tried. Like ECU, Houston has invested into their basketball program and hired good coaches. It just didn't work out.
I think things are looking up for the Cougars. Kelvin Sampson is a winner and recruits well.

Reaches, retreads, has-been, and never-were's are the theme for our coaches since Guy Lewis.
Pat Foster got a bad rap but after him it’s been downhill (note, Penders was ok just didn't have the fire he used to). Some might call Sampson a retread as well but it’s not like he isn't a quality coach he was available due to some poor decisions (which are no longer against the rules) not because he can't coach or recruit.
He is not over the hill he is hungry! This is the first time the school has made a real commitment to a long term vision for the program in over 25 years. This will pay off even if in 3-4 years Sampson moves on. The program should be bigger than any one coach or any group of players (I am talking to you House and Thomas).

as the only 2 big public schools in the west, if memphis is half way decent this will turn into a football rivalry which will linger into the basketball side aswell

We are but have not yet. Practice Facility is being built.
The actual arena will be sometime in the next year or two.
That said yeah it needed a real update not the dingy banaid they pulled in the late 90's.
