Yeah it's funny how every time someone says they aren't NBA caliber players, it's taken as an insult. So pea-brained. No shame in making 6 figures overseas right out of college, or even just being a good college player that used a sport to earn a degree. It's corny but I just root for these guys to do well in whatever they do. They can be in the NBA, sell insurance, coach, whatever. I hope they wear the Memphis name well in whatever they do.

Mike Dixon was a fine college player, NOBODY who has attended an NBA game was confident he would ever be an NBA player.

This quote says it correctly.

We had an elite team with elite college talent that was always going to be a hard slog to the NBA:

- JJ: too small to get in the lane in the NBA, will make major money in euroball and be a HUGE success as an international
- CC: too inconsistent with his one potential NBA skill (shooting) and not an NBA level athlete. Will play for money, but likely overseas.
- Dixon: kind of a mix between JJ/CC, but not a real point and too small to play the 2 in the NBA, slight and can get banged around. Will play for money as well, likely overseas.
- Geron: physically probably the best bet, not as skilled, but if he goes to Europe and continues to develop, can come back as a 'D and 3' type and become a Ariza type off the bench in the NBA.

If we are defining success as being an NBA player, that is a VERY narrow definition. All four of these guys will play a kids game for a good living and then be set up via degrees and personal discipline to be elite leaders in business, their communities, whatever they work toward.

I am immensely proud of our '14 class and think they represent our city and fan base very well considering. They are all already successful and will continue to be successful as long as they put in the work (not just on the court, but in life).

I am certainly welcome to criticizing Pastner, but criticizing him for not making NBA players out of these four elite college (but not quite NBA caliber) players rings incredibly hollow. Put these guys on Duke/UNC/UK and they still aren't in the association at this point.

Excellent posts, Rob and Sundance. I am proud of our graduates, in so many ways.

The only NBA he looked ready for is maybe the Norwegian Basketball Assn. Not a knock on Dixon but way short on NBA talent and size.

dixon was a nice pick up for us.
he gave us some good even great at times mins.

Of course, most of us will admit that the 4 sr guard rotation was not near as dominant as we hoped.

Dixon won several games for us from the bench last year. His legacy is just fine, in my book.

In related news, Geron went 2-5 last night and added 4 assists.

Tarik had 2 points in 13 minutes, 1 rebound, 0-2 FT, 3 fouls and 2 turnovers. Not stellar. But his team was +9 while he was in, so you never know.

Carney had 10 yesterday. Barton had 17 and several highlight reel plays.

Geron is having a nice game tonight. 17 minutes so far, 8 points on 4-6 shooting, plus 4 boards and no turnovers. He's definitely getting a fair look in summer league.

Team Penny is 3 and 0 as of early this morning. KJ is fearless 100% of the time and comes through in clutch situations. The game today was down to the wire You can watch the recording here.

I was surfing through the sports channels last night and got to watch Geron with the Rockets for a few minutes. He was active and missed a dunk (got fouled) that would have been a SC Top Ten.

Well done.

And I agree about the overall talent- Geron, Dixon, Crawford were good NCAA players, but nothing more really. I think folks mentally elevated them to being as good as Joe which helped create a little inflation. Like everyone, I still wish the team had been even better than the really good team they were- but times are still looking quite good.

The NBA is made up of about 400 players. The NCAA is made up of about 4500 players. Maybe as many as 1500 players leave college each year. Maybe 100 new players (of all ages and nations) sniff the NBA each year.

Odds are long that any individual player gets a shot.

It's a truly elite group, and Memphis has its share of players in that group.
[/quote]
Realistically it might be smart for some guys to realize their dream could easily turn into a nightmare with odds like that and spend more time in the books.

That calls for more maturity than most young men have, particularly those with only one or two years of college.
