Duplantier and Rutter CCL All-Stars
Nice to see two of our pitchers made the All-Star Game for the California Collegiate League. Duplantier is among the league leaders in ERA (1.50) and Rutter in saves (2). I believe the game will be on one of the Fox sports channels.

Rutter has been absolutely lights out, and his command has been exceptional so far this Summer. Williamson has also been quite effective as a situational lefty, but...he's still struggling with his control. McCanna was routed his last outing in the Cape, following 3 strong starts, but I wouldn't be surprised if he's finally hit the wall after pitching so many innings during the college season.

Great to see Duplantier and Rutter do so well. Our pitching next year should be truly exceptional.
Starters: Fox, McCanna, Stephens, Duplantier
Relievers: Teykl, Ditman, Rutter, brothers Orewiler, McCarthy
Other new guys to consider: Solecitto (highly touted juco lefty), Amador (first team all-state HS), Glen Otto (first team all state TAPPS), Ricky Salinas (highly touted righty), in additional to some others I know less about (Rodgers, Dunlap (?), Dane Myers, McElligott
Just our returning pitching is exceptional. If we can get a couple of the newcomers to contribute meaningfully, then we could have one of our deepest staffs in recent memory.

From what I've heard, the coaching staff believes Solecitto is going to be a weekend starter from the get-go, which means whomever end up as our mid-week starters would be Friday or Saturday starters on almost any other team. LHP McElligott started to impress the coaching staff towards the end of last season (in which he redshirted), and JWilliamson is pitching well this Summer, albeit with his familiar control issues. However, from what I understand, Dunlap finally went under the knife last month and miss all of next season. (Why he delayed so long is a mystery to everyone.)
To say we'll be loaded next year pitching-wise would be the understatement of all understatements.

Seems like Rice's hitters rake almost every year in the CCL and Rice's pitchers dominate almost every year. But I haven't necessarily noticed this success translating when they come back to Rice. Anyone know how the CCL ranks compared to the other collegiate leagues around the country? Cape is obviously the best, and I think Northwoods is at the top of the next tier, but things have changed dramatically over the last decade so I'm not really sure where CCL falls.

Actually, that's not really true. Rathjen had a great Summer with the Foresters and followed it up with a terrific Sophomore season. Rat had one good season with them and one not so good Summer with them. Hoelscher did not hit well at all last Summer in the CCL, and Teykl is struggling this Summer. Both Simms and Chargois had elite Summers in the Cape before replicating their performance the following season for the Owls.
Right now, I think the scouts perceive the Cape to be heads and shoulders above every other Summer league. New England is probably considered the top of the second tier, along with the Northland, CCL, Alaskan and Cal Ripkin.

This would be a good question to ask Aaron Fitt (Baseball America) during one of his online chats ... or even in a personal e-mail.

Jon struck out 12 in his last start. Makes a nice play on a smash the 1B lays out for and flips the ball on the bounce which Jon fields as he crosses the base. 3 up 3 down.

RE: Duplantier and Rutter CCL All-Stars
Better late than never-- today Kendall posted his writeup on the top prospects in the California League, led by Jon Duplantier and with Tristan Gray getting a mention (as co-leader in HRs with 6)...
http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View...ign=buffer
Quote:TOP 20 PROSPECTS
1. Jon Duplantier, rhp, Santa Barbara Foresters (Rice/SO in 2015)
Duplantier put together an impressive freshman campaign for the Owls, and continued his successful ways this summer in the California Collegiate League. Duplantier is an athletic 6-foot-4, 210-pounder, who tallied a 1.50 ERA in 54 innings of work. He also struck out 74 and walked 17. Duplantier showed a sizable velocity jump with his fastball, sitting 90-95 this summer with some sink, while also showcasing an above-average slider. Duplantier showed a good, easy delivery this past summer, while also working his fastball well on both sides of the plate, and also showed a swing-and-miss slider at times. Duplantier also showed good feel for his changeup, and should be a Friday or Saturday starter for the Owls in 2015.
17. Tristan Gray, ss, PUF Capitalists (Rice/FR in 2015)
The Owls got a good one with the addition of this athletic outfielder. Gray showed very well against college competition this past summer, and the 6-foot-3, 160-pounder, who could use a year of rigorous strength and conditioning, impressed. Gray is surprisingly strong for his size, leading the league in home runs. He also proved to be a quality defender with good instincts and speed. Gray heads to Rice despite being drafted in the 37th round by the Mets.
