The maturation of Marshall quarterback Rakeem Cato
Quote:HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Every now and then, maybe on Mother's Day or Christmas, or whenever he sees a teammate celebrating a big win with their parents, Rakeem Cato can feel the anger start to bubble up inside.

He can still remember everything about his mother, Juannese, but mostly that she was the kind of woman who worked two jobs, taking care of her seven children and three more she took in when a close friend passed away.

And basically, she did it all on her own...

"It's not something you fix overnight."

RE: The maturation of Marshall quarterback Rakeem Cato
I'd venture a guess there isn't a poster on this board that can relate to that story in 'real' terms. I can only imagine what that must've been like.....

Kudos to all that adjust/overcome adversity on any relative scale

As a sports fan, I would love to see the Herd run the dadgum table and finally get this conference into a BCS bowl.

...is a 30/30 story just waiting to happen....

Good background for those that got on him when he was a freshman for yelling at his teammates in the UCF game.

I remember seeing him around town during his first year here. He would always be eating alone even though there would be a table of players in the same restaurant. Makes me understand the situation a little better.

RE: The maturation of Marshall quarterback Rakeem Cato
I remember this short story about Cato when he first signed for Marshall:

The Rakeem Cato Story

This short clip about Rakeem just touches the highlights of him living in the worst part of Miami in Liberty City and his father being in jail. The article in USAToday goes into much more detail.

No matter were Cato's path leads him next if it be the NFL, CFL, Arena League or the private sector I think the 4 years he will have spent at Marshall will help shape the rest of his life.

Love him as a player, just wish he'd man up and take responsibility for his little one.

When he keeps his temper and emotions in check he's as good as anyone in the country. But, the heroic deeds in his upbringing were performed by his sister and grandfather along with coaches who apparently gave up something to make sure he was raised right. I understand the temper issues. My own father died when I was 11, so I can relate a little there.

He hasn't "Blown Up" on anyone since his freshman year. Last year he had the 4th highest number of yards with 3,916 and the 2nd most TDs thrown with 39. The only QB with more TDs was Heisman Winner Jameis Winston who had 40.

Cato even though he had a support network was basically raised by the hair of his head. His oldest brother was 19 and sister was 18 when they got custody of Cato and his 6 other brothers and sisters when his mom died.

He certainly did show his rear end in Greenville in 2012. I sat right behind the Marshall bench and he was going off on players and coaches. The coach was doing him a huge favor by holding him out to keep him healthy and his replacement played very well and almost won the game.

So he went off purely on the basis of being competitive and wanting to play. Two years ago.

That's exactly what the story alludes to...his maturation of taking that competitiveness and getting all of the positive characteristics out of it.

Cato was hurt in the ECU game in 12. And Froh could start at any NAQ school in the country and probably a 1/3 or more power schools. Was sad to see him transfer to UMass this year.

due to circumstances, be glad it's only one....

I can't imagine the fight he deals with in his mind 20 years from now....

look at the big picture instead of that one night stand.....might help you down the road as well.....

Oh there is two. I just know the circumstances around the second one. I wish I didn't.

....kinda had a feeling the previous post of 'one' wasn't the whole story....

hopefully, he deals with this and shovels the idiots aside that are most assuredly going to piggyback on his success moving forward

money can be be both cruel and kind....ability to handle adversity is priceless....especially to those that carry the weight of responsibility....

He showed his rear end to ECU last year in Huntington, too, if you know what I mean.

No ECU just seen our rears in the mirror. When we showed them just how weak their vaunted D- was.
