I don't know the circumstances with respect to Kentucky. Unless the player they bestowed the honor upon consents to it either indefinitely or for a particular player, then it's not really retiring the number and lessens the honor.

Do you think Kenyon and Twyman were on a different level as players than Logan, Fortson, or Van Exel?

RE: SK is Back!
It's a very tough call with retiring numbers, but i think it's something you have to set a parameter even if some do not agree. i would honor the all american as i believe they currently do in the end zone in the old configuration. i'm not sure if that is there right now with what started on the renovation last offseason. I would only retire numbers for national player of the year guys, like a kenyon or oscar. The only omission we have right now is Logan whom i believe was SI's national player of the year his senior season. I think Jay Williams won the ap player of the year. There are various player of the year awards, but that is a delineating factor for me. Look, if you are hanging in the rafters on a permanent basis for one reason(retired) or all american, it's all good.

Twyman's jersey retirement decision had to be made on a combination of factors because he was not a POY or consensus first team all-american. His great NBA career as player and broadcaster plus his humanitarian pursuits must have weighed in to make the decision. I think it should be a very selective club for jersey retirement but I think we could include a few more. If you picked our consensus first team All-Americans it would also include Ron Bonham, Tom Thacker, Danny Fortson , Kenyon Martin, Steve Logan and of course Oscar. Those players plus Twyman would be seven retired jerseys; not too many in my opinion and would give respect to our national championship teams. I suspect we limited the jersey retirement numbers because no career will ever compare to the one Oscar had.

Good for SK. Hopefully he gets a chance with a contender at some point. Easier said than done I suppose since they are only what....3...maybe 4 contenders in the NBA?
