Lindy's has Va Tech at #39 (#40 was Missouri, #38 is Penn State). He says the Hokies should be strong on defense and at RB, but QB and OL are question marks going into Fall training camp.

IMO, if Brewer pans out at QB and the OL can perform adequately, VT could end up winning 10+ games this season (if not, could be another 7-5 year).

I do not think that there are 38 teams better than the Hokies! 07-coffee3

Be more shocked at 10+ wins than a 7-5 record.

I like VT, but winning 10+ games isn't realistic to me especially when Miami has Duke Johnson back and the Blue Devils defend their division crown not to mention UNC getting better.

Lindy's said Louisville beat Florida State in the 2013 Sugar Bowl, but it was Florida. So how much do they really know? I ask you?

While Lindy has the Hokies at #39, Phil Steele has VT ranked #29 pre-season. This is what Steele wrote about the Hokies prospects for 2014:

Quote:VT still has a great shot at a double digit win season and a possible return to the ACC Title game

A lot of it (as Lindy points out) depends on schedule; this year VT plays BC and WF out of the Atlantic.

The over under on VT's season is 7.5. So 7 wins wouldn't be a surprise.

Winning 7 or 8 games in a horrible Coastal division is part of the reason the ranking projection is so low.

The division almost gives you 5-6 wins.

I'd definitely pick the "over" on that one; anything less than 8 wins for VT would be disappointing, IMO. If I had to guess right now I'd say 9-3 (losses to Ohio State, @UNC and @Pitt - only because the Panthers seem to have the Hokies' number, so to speak).

Preseason Top 25: 5 most underrated teams
by Bill Bender, July 14, 2014 8:07am EDT

Quote:Virginia Tech
Composite: NR
High: NR
Low: NR

Why this is low: It's easy to see why most are selling the Hokies. Virginia Tech is 15-11 the last two seasons, has a first-year starter at quarterback in Mark Leal and is picked by many to finish fourth or lower in the Coastal Division. It's also easy to forget the Hokies beat Miami and North Carolina last season and lost to Duke by three points. The two toughest conference games are at North Carolina and Duke. With a defense that features standout sophomore cornerbacks Kendall Fuller and Brandon Facyson, the Hokies are actually a buy-low team.

I agree with that assessment. Except Leal is 2nd string QB, probably looking at 3rd string, when Brewer makes it to campus. The defense is stacked on the line and the secondary. We have a 5th year senior taking over at mike linebacker. There's experience at the OL, TE, WR and RB. The only question is QB. Granted that's a big question mark but Brewer was a starter for Texas Tech. So we probably won't be starting an inexperienced QB. I really like the over on our season over under.

10 wins for Hokie Nation is a stretch. In fact, I'm looking at 3 "L"s already:

- at Ohio State
- at North Carolina or at Pitt
- Miami or Boston College

I'm thinking 9-3 regular season + ACC CG loss + bowl win = 10-4
