Missouri State's new field hockey stadium is nearly complete. As they compete in the MAC I figured you guys would be interested.

Very nice.

Question about the football stadium: Has there been changes to the initial released rendering? I thought the original plans had dorms behind the seating on one side of the stadium and I can't see that in this recent construction pic. Am I remembering that wrong or thinking of another stadium rendering?

I think that was just an idea they were thinking about but nothing ever came from it and they never released any drawings or made an official statement about putting dorms under the stands as far as I know.

The seating capacity is still about the same as before (17,000) but I know it was designed for easy/quick expansion just incase they ever go FBS. The new eastside stands were built with a oversized foundation that can hold an upper deck if there were to add one. Without the track there is now also enough room to build stands behind the south endzone as well.

Amazing to have a field like that dedicated to a non-revenue sport. Congrats!

If Mo. State was near St. Louis, I'd say let's make them #14.

Desire and resources to be FBS are really, really important and spending money on nice facilities is evidence of it.

Thanks for the info, I must have been thinking of another stadium.

Very good things happening at MO State.

I'd hate to point this out, but a lot of the MAC - Kent State, Miami, Ohio, Bowling Green, Western Michigan, Central Michigan, Northern Illinois, Ball State - aren't located near large cities.

Just sayin'

They double as recreation fields for the students as well, who is fitting the bill for them.

RE: Missouri State's new field hockey field (MAC member in FH)
Missouri State is also a MAC member in Swimming/Diving.

With UMass leaving soon and the conference membership back down to 12, another program would need to be added along with Missouri State to keep an even number of Conference members for all sport competition.

Still though with Missouri State already being an affiliate member in 2 sports, it's only a matter of time and the continued investing of resources before they will be offered full membership. Not sure how their fanbase would feel about leaving MVC hoops behind. But with Creighton gone to the Big East and you have to believe that Wichita State is going to get contacted by the A10 when they lose members to the BE; MVC hoops won't be much different than MAC hoops.

Multiple non-revenue sports ... that's also Missouri State's Lacrosse field (though of course it is its role as Missouri State's field hockey field that is on topic here).

I remember when I was living on Australia and my kids came home and said, "They play hockey! Can we play?" and I told them to ask if it was field hockey or ice hockey. Sure enough, it was field hockey. It got a boost in Australia as a youth participation sport since it was an Olympic team sport in the "real" Olympics, and there was government money for improving development facilities for Olympic sports.

Now you've gone and hurt Cleveland's feelings, saying it isn't a major city.

But they've got Lebron back, so I've sure they'll be able to shrug it off.

As far as figuring Chicago isn't a major city ... uh, yeah, right ... ???

Nearness is a relative thing - Kent State is about an hour's drive to Cleveland, and there's some attention to Kent State sports in Cleveland media, but we're definitely way down the priority list in the media. We probably get less press than some of the local high schools

As to Northern Illinois & Chicago, it's over an hour drive, and you can read all the debates in these BBS over whether it's 'near' Chicago.

The real 'nearness' measure for cities to schools is how many attendees come to the schools sporting events from the cities. I can tell you there's little attendence from Cleveland at Kent State, except for the CSU/KSU games. From what I've seen for Northern Illinois basketball attendence, there can't be many people making the drive from Chicago

I live in Chicago and get to Dekalb in just under an hour as long as it is not rush hour. Plenty of Chicago folk back the Huskies, nobody backing the basketball last few years, seems to be reverting to normal again with improved play. Chicago papers/media cover the Huskies fairly well, especially when we're winning.

Kent may be an hour's drive to the City of Cleveland, but most of Cleveland lies outside the city ... and its an entirely open question where people put the boundaries around "the Cleveland Area".

As far as media market goes, Portage County is inside the Cleveland media market. The issue of profile in that market is more a matter of the dominance of pro sports.

But in the terms of the statement, "near" a major city (as opposed to "in" a major city), certainly within an hour's drive has to be considered "near" a major city ~ there are plenty of people in this country who have a longer daily commute than that.
