Exclamation Do southern states put the county on their license plates for political reasons?
One thing we know is a state cannot be considered Southern if it does not include the county name on it for the Standard issue plates. I was talking to a state rep the other day that said they Did this traditionally for political reasons. Is this true? If not does anyone know why?

The county has been included on the plates in Ohio so it is not a southern thing unless you consider Ohio southern.

Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina do not. Actually Florida is the only one I have noticed that does.

Really helps narrow down an area to look if people can see the county a vehicle is registered in in case of an accident, Crime, DUI driver ect. I never associated it with political motives in 46 years of driving.

So, so far, Iowa, Ohio, and Florida are the only southern states that include their County on their license plates.

Ok, WP, so we've got Iowa, Ohio, Washington DC, and Florida as the only southern states that have counties on their plates.

Pretty sure Georgia does. I've seen Cobb and Macon on their plates before.

Alabama's (the ones they just replaced) did it by numbers. If you didn't know what the number designations were, you had no clue.

I've noticed that some states seem to have a ton of variations in design as well. NC has been fairly consistent over the years besides the specialty plates.

Tennessee, Mississippi, Kentucky, and Georgia all put counties on the plates (or did in the recent past). I don't know the reason for putting it on the plate, but most plates have some type of code that is associated with the county of issue.

Help law enforcement know if the car is local.
Additionally there are different requirements of some NC
counties. For example, only Mecklenburg County where Charlotte
is located, and Wake County where Raleigh is located are
deemed by the EPA to have higher carbon emission standards
because of more pollution in those counties.
We are taxed by the county also.
