Influx of Illegals across the U.S.-Mexican border
Here is an interesting comparison between two articles about illegal immigration. A Michelle Malkin opine about how the Mexican gov't is led by a bunch of hypocrites who staunchly track illegal immigration into Mexico - the southern border between it and Central America and the - while complaining about U.S. immigration crackdowns on illegal Mexican migrants. A more recent U.K. Telegram article on how the lack of southern border enforcement by Mexico of their own border with Central America is hurting the U.S.

http://michellemalkin.com/2010/04/28/pol...al-aliens/ - Note that this article was written in 2010.

http://www.telegram.com/article/20140629...06299923/0 - Written in June of this year.

Some of my thoughts on what I think is happening:
  • U.S. gov't had a tacit agreement (or outright secret agreement) with the Mexican gov't to encourage them to enforce their southern border in exchange for us to allow some illegal immigration of Mexican's into the U.S.
  • The Drug Cartels became a lot more powerful after 2010 and is taking more resources away from Mexico to monitor immigration as closely as they used to.
  • The U.S. pissed off Mexico in some other way and thus Mexico says "screw it" and is letting the illegals pass thru Mexico to get to the U.S.

Whatever the reason, it's the lack of enforcement by Mexico on their southern border that is resulting in what we are seeing today. Clearly, a much stronger border maintained by the U.S. is the right answer regardless of what Mexico decides to do with their southern border. I know a lot of people say illegal immigration is fueled by Dems wanting to swell voter ranks. But it's also still a boon to business owners who are looking for cheap labor too - and this is still the likely overarching reason why the U.S. gov't refuses to take action to enforce our borders.

RE: Influx of Illegals across the U.S.-Mexican border
My parents retired to live in Guatemala around 10 years ago. They live around 20 miles from the Mexican border and do most of their shopping in the Mexican city of Comitan which is an hour away from their house. They only pass through the official check point when they have to renew papers (visa, car permits, etc). Otherwise they use one of the many ranch roads that crisscross the Mexico-Guatemala border. These roads are completely unguarded and have been for decades. In other words, if you want to cross the Mexico-Guatemala border illegally just walk a mile (probably even less) to the left or right of the official border crossing and you are in. It has to be one of the most unguarded borders in the world.

I think everyone is missing the point here. What Mexico or the United States does isn't motivating people to immigrate illegally to this country. It is what is happening within their own countries that motivates them to immigrate north.

Starvation, kidnapping, prostitution, killings, cartels.

This is what motivates them to migrate.

Maybe we should do what Mexico does, let them keep going, and dump them in Canada.

The parts of our country where they end up have a lot of that as well, maybe with the lone exception of starvation. But then again, there isn't a famine in central America anyways.

Only partially true. The vast majority of these people are just plain old fashioned dirt poor. Truly poor, not to be confused with the American version of poor which would easily be considered middle class in these countries. Its more of a gold rush mentality IMO.
Imagine if you live in a mud hut, with only a pair of sandals and one extra change of clothes being the total sum of your belongings. Then you hear stories of people going north and getting "rich" enough to buy a car, build a two-story cement block house and enough money to either buy more land or start a small business. Then not only do you hear stories, you see with your own eyes as wives or parents of the man who went north start building houses with the money their husbands or sons sent from the USA. You are going to fell like a total fool eking out a meager living at home while you could be making major money in the US.

I don't disagree. The United States has always had that appeal for centuries.

Wanting to better your life and the lives of your family is not exclusive to Americans.

It is about money and a life. After they get work, next order of business is to send 50% of it back home.

Though many of you may not want to believe it, much of what Okla's said since 2007 has been pretty damn accurate. You guys can talk and pick and joke all you want, but when it all boils down, what Okla has always said has usually been spot on.

Its not the truth. You have to be citizen to vote and the political climate just isn't here to turn all illegals into legal residents, much less citizens. Even if Obama were to try, it would never get past the supreme court.

We've already addressed your ignorance on the matter. No one has the energy to trod through it with you again. Do some research, educate yourself on reality...get with the program.
