Personally, I still think we're heading toward 4 power conferences of 16-20 who's conference championship games will equal your round of 8...

Disagree. The postseason conforms to what the leagues want to do, not the other way around. It certainly isn't happening any time soon.

the biggest problem for 4 power conferences is the Pac 12. If they had been able to pluck Texas, etc. then yes- we are at 4 power conferences right now. But fact is they didn't.

Yup. It's probably easier to get to two super-huge conferences of 30+ each than to come to 4 conferences of 16-20 at this point.

I'll keep banging this drum until someone listens...6 teams--as awkward as it sounds--is your next iteration of the playoff.

The Power 5 get automatic reps in the league. (I do think that E vs. W, N vs. S conference championship game formats are out the window though when this happens...the league wants the top two teams, no matter what in that game if it ever become a TRUE quarterfinal round).

There is 1 at-large bid...for the illusion of "access" and the hubris of the SEC.

The round of 6 is played in the same weekend at the same site. One game Friday night, one game Saturday night. Cities will bid for this site just like they do the championship game. Make it two weeks after the conference champ round. Around Dec. 15-21.

Then, the New Year's CFP (final 4) will still exist in its present form (which I believe will be WILDLY popular).

I would go with 4 highest ranked p5 teams get auto bids & the other 4 stay open

That's not going to happen because it devalues the conference championship games. An auto bid will INCREASE the values of those CCGs. It almost makes them a quarterfinal game...when it happens...however it happens (my 6-team theory is above).
