RE: We need to get this Alabama game
I don't see it happening; for no other reason than it would shrink bama's home games to six next year and they don't do six home games.

RE: We need to get this Alabama game
Why would we be scheduling a game with Alabama? Don't they know that we'll be in the sec soon enough?

I'm not sure why a veteran here like yourself would decide to start posting like a troll but you can't say an intentionally obnoxious post like that on a UC board isn't begging for a sarcastic response (and yes I did just stumble upon a Jennifer Lawrence gif site )

We'll NEVER get that return game. And wasn't the whole point of getting Alabama for us to have a marquee opponent to open Nippert?

Maybe. But this isn't UC's first rodeo. I'm sure that if UC signs a contract for that deal, it will contain clauses making that VERY expensive for Alabama to choose. One payday for playing there and another one for the cancellation. I'd rather have the return game of course, but under the circumstances, a boatload of of money wouldn't be the absolute worst consolation prize if it came to that.

No it was never the point for a marquee opponent to open nippert.

RE: We need to get this Alabama game
I said this over on the main board, so I might as well say it over here...
This is MY opinion, and mine alone:
I say if you can get a date down in Tuscaloosa, do it. UC needs to be playing the BIG teams, and if that means having to go into their house, pull the trigger.
The college football landscape has changed. There's no way around that fact. With the SEC and other conferences passing mandates that their teams will play 9 conference games and also mandating that one of the OOC games must be against another "Power5" opponent, the opportunities are drying up for us on the outside. Also, teams like 'Bama are pushing for a MINIMUM of six home games and they WILL get it. Hell, some of these teams will get 8 home games a year. Any non-P5 team is no longer in a bargaining position.
Some will say "Well, what about Oklahoma?" True, we got OU and NCST to do home-and-home with us, but that is well in the past. And for the OU and NCST series I could counter with the VaTech series where the UC game was bought out and moved to a neutral site (DC), or the Tennessee game which was a solo-date, or even the Ohio State series where OSU has bought out the Cincinnati option since 2004.
Get the game in Tuscaloosa. The other option is to have a sixth home date with some lower division team. If you can work it through the conference to get a conference mate to come in and open Nippert, then great. Otherwise, Whit's legacy will be Alabama A&T or whoever it is that opens the new stadium. But I don't think you're going to get better than that.

I mostly agree with your bottom line that it wouldn't be the worst thing schedule wise to end up with just a road game against Alabama. But per my post above, that happens only if we get paid handsomely. Alabama doesn't have a lot of options - we have some negotiating leverage here even if we agree to play at their house first.
On the broader scheduling issue, I don't think it is as dire as you make it for many of the better G5 programs like UC. And per my post in another thread, the big reason is the major role of the new committee and their directive to include SOS:
Quote:The committee picks four teams for the playoff and seed them, plus select the pairings in the other four bowl games (subject to certain restrictions and tie-ins). The group will release its top 25 rankings weekly on Tuesdays seven times during the season,[24] with the first release on Oct. 28, 2014 and the final rankings Sunday, Dec. 7, 2014.[25] The group, which meets at the Gaylord Texan hotel in Grapevine, Texas,[26] will reportedly meet in person up to 10 total times a year.[21]
A team's strength of schedule will be one of the most pertinent considerations for the committee in making its selections.[27] Other factors that the committee will weigh are conference championships, team records, and head-to-head results,[5]
I think it will have a lot of parallels to the basketball system except with fewer games played it gets even riskier to schedule cupcake teams at home if you have designs on the playoffs or major bowls. The teams that play tough opponents, especially on the road, will be rewarded per the committee's explicit criteria. And UC should be considered a quality opponent by the human members of the committee and also according to the "objective" statistical data that is presented to them to consider. Obviously we'd rather be in a P5 conference, but until that happens, I think there will still be quality scheduling opportunities for UC under the new system.

You can't mention that without adding the context of who paid for the game to be moved, how much they paid, and why they paid it.
It was a rather unique situation.

RE: We need to get this Alabama game
I know I'll always be in the minority on this point but I am absolutely against playing a team like Alabama without getting a return home game. And mostly I'm against playing them even if UC would get a home-and-home series. UC's best roadmap is to play the usual OOC scrubs, play a beatable P5 team or two, then run the table in conference. A 12-0 record with a weak schedule trumps an 11-1 schedule where you get waxed by the only real legit team you played. If you're undefeated then there's always the arguement that UC belongs with the big boys. Getting hammered by Bama just proves their point that UC doesn't belong. And let's be realistic, UC isn't on their level yet. I'd give it a 75% chance UC loses by two TD's or more, a 20% UC loses by less than two TD's, and a 5% chance UC wins. It's not worth those odds.
Make yourself look good until a P5 conference comes calling. And if they day ever comes where UC gets into P5 conference, then schedule anyone you want.

I am not sure where I side on this argument. This is kind of like comparing the 2008 to the 2009 seasons. In 2009 we went undefeated against some top 25 teams and conference opponents where as in 2008 we played Oklahoma in Norman and lost by a considerable margin. In addition, we accumulated a loss against Conn along the way.
I think on any given day, any team can beat another as evidenced by our win over Wisconsin and our near miss against Ohio State. I do not like to be seen as a pretender, as we were against Florida. A stronger schedule is how I would choose.

The 2009 team was ranked #3 in the nation and was within 1 second of going to the national championship game. And even with the loss to Florida finished 8th.
The 2008 team was never higher than 12th and finished 17th.
That's the difference.
I'll bet Ohio State doesn't regret playing in those BCS title games where they got crushed and only got their due to a weak schedule.

Back on the fence again. 09 was a lot of fun. Playing Alabama could be fun too.

Tom Groeschen tweeted a couple hours ago that Tuberville said we've talked with Texas A&M about scheduling. Also that Alabama home-home unlikely.

A&M is some ways is a better opponent for UC than Bama. It would give UC another trip to Texas and provide our fans an unique road trip. Might be fall into the category of winnable game too.

We have a home-and-home with Michigan (I thought that was in basketball with a one and done at their place in fb)?
Our stadium is going to seat 45,000??
Why doesn't our coach know these things???

Tom Groeschen also had a link to a very good article from FBSchedules.com that outlies our scheduling issues. They pulled some additional comments made by Tubeville on the radio yesterday.

The Football arrangement is a "one and done" at Michigan. Part of the compensation for that was also a BB series with a home UC date.
"New" Nippert's actual capacity has not been formally announced but it has been put "in the neighborhood" of 40k. 45 seems to me to be out of the ball-park.
Finally, Tuberville "gets" it. It's a game.
