Kind of a catch 22. If you don't try to challenge automobiles and you ride with a respect for cars, you don't need a helmet. Then again, the helmet does nothing for you in event of an automobile collision. Come to think of it, every death I can remember was a helmet wearing spandex mafia member.

That is crazy talk. Helmets save lives. Everybody should respect everybody on the highway, regardless of what mode of transportation you are using. Even then human error will result in collisions.
I stand by my post. If you stay off the main roads or ride on the sidewalk or bike path, there will be no collisions. If you try to be Lance Armstrong and battle cars for road space at full speed, your helmet wont do jack for you. They spend millions on bike paths and the idiots still ride on the road.

Bicycles are legal transportation on the highway. They are expected to follow the same rules of the road as anything else. I do agree that common sense needs to be applied. Busy highways should be avoided, but on the other hand if you are driving on a secondary road with bikes on it you need to just be patient. Mutual respect is the key.
Helmets, like any other safety feature aren't full proof but statistically, like seatbelts or airbags you are greatly increasing your chances of survival with them.

Reminds me of a Dilbert cartoon where Dogbert is explaining about bikes. "Bikes have uncomfortable seats. They hurt. Solution: dorky pants".

I don't need a fcking helmet to ride my bike. Then again...I am not racing around on a bike with those narrow ass tires. Those things are the real danger. I know of 4 men that have been seriously injured in the last year. One broke a hip...One broke BOTH arms...One broke a leg and another fell and fractured his jaw. None of them were doing anything particularly dangerous. Those damn bikes will get away from you very quickly.

In Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee they are not allowed on highways. but i agree my wife used to live in an area of Atlanta that had tons of bikers and they just piss me off. They ride 3-4 deep and take up half to 3/4 of the lane on a two lane road. its just annoying especially when your used to driving in Atlanta. (for those not familiar with Atlanta speed, if your not going at least 70 on the highway, you better get out of the way.)

The guy I reference above that broke both arms was riding in traffic in Myrtle Beach. Someone pulled out of a side street...wacko. He is lucky to be alive.

Like I said, common sense applies. Bikers should use the secondary roads and low traffic highways. But you shouldn't be riding on a sidewalk. That endangers pedestrians. Helmets do save lives.
To be honest, I'm not going to call those bike riders liberal due to spandex and sh*t... But man do bike riders piss me off too. Here in WPA we have countless trails and even bike lanes and these sorry bastards will still ride in the middle of the road. One time I was on a back country road and when I attempted to pass these two cyclist they nearly ran me off of the left side of the road. I so wanted to get out of my car and pistol whip both of their sorry asses. Worst part is, there is a bike/hiking trail 200 feet to our right. SMH

There are always a few in every group that ruin it for everyone else. Back country roads are the places where bikes should be riding on though. Patience is the key. Wait till you can pass all the way or most of the way over in the other lane, don't crowd them up on the far right and everything should go well. I don't ride anymore but when I did years ago I always tried to wave them around when I could see they had a safe spot to go around. Some people would try to pass staying in the right lane and that is very dangerous for the cyclist. If there are potholes or broken pavement on the edge it can be really bad. The cyclist needs some room to make slight changes left and right.
The reason they don't ride on the trails is because they are on road bikes, not mountain bikes, too different things all together. Bikes shouldn't be on walking trails either. Like sidewalks it is a danger for pedestrians/hikers.
