At least in the software industry, manufacturers are upfront about telling you that you don't own your software, but that you bought a license to it. Real property has basically deteriorated to the same concept.

There are simple ways around this. Frankly, if the guy thinks it's important he'd take one of them. Instead, he's making a big deal out of nothing.
