Best Tiger Football Teams In Each Of The Last 6 Decades
In my opinion (and based not so much on records as my personal judgement):
50's: Spook Murphy's 1959 team with dual-threat QB James Earl Wright. Based on photographic evidence, it took crooked officials to prevent a tie with Bear Bryant's Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa.
60's: Murphy's undefeated 1963 team, which featured a great defense led by LB John Bramlett. Tied #3 Ole Miss 0-0 and finished ranked 14th nationally (UPI).
70"s: Richard Williamson's 1976 team. Despite leading the nation in fumbles (due to running the risky veer option offense) and the distraction of a mid-season player strike, finished 7-4 with wins over Ole Miss, Florida State, #20 Mississippi State, and (then very respectable) SMU. Had more talent on the field against Tennessee but blew the game with turnovers. Also beat Louisville, but that didn't mean much in those days.
80's: Rex Dockery's 1983 team. Beat 3 SEC teams. Beat Cincinnati 43-10 and Louisville 45-7 (which, again, meant little at the time).
90's: Chuck Stobart's 1991 team. Beat #16 Southern Cal and Mississippi State. Lost to #7 Alabama 7-10 by fumbling a punt return. Beat Louisville 35-7 (which, again, meant little at the time).
2000's: Tommy West's 2003 team, with RB DeAngelo Williams and QB Danny Wimprine. Finshed 9-4, beating Eli Manning-led Ole Miss and winning the New Orleans Bowl. Beat Louisville 37-7 and Cincinnati (but that still didn't mean much at the time).

RE: Best Tiger Football Teams In Each Of The Last 6 Decades
1991- Southern Cal was not very good. They had good players but only won 3-4 games the whole year.
1991 - qb was Keith Benton. 1992- qb was Steve Matthews
1991 - best reciever was Russel Jones (Russell Copeland was suspended the whole year for being a knucklehead)
1992 - starting wr's - Ruussell Copeland - Issac Bruce (Copeland was the better of the two in college).
The defense in 92 was more senior laden and so was the offensive line.
My point being is that the 92 team was better.

One of Stobart's 6-5 teams lost all 5 games by an average of like 5 points.

Fred Pancoasts teams in the 70's were pretty damn good. Lots of talent on those teams. Beat ole miss 3years in a row.

I remember it all too well, but we still lead Cincinnati 18-13 overall. I am willing to bet that they never catch up.

You forgot one:
2010's: 2013 Season = Our first year in the American Athletic Conference, Fuente's team finished the season at 3-9, tying Larry Porter's career Tiger win record. Notable wins included... Uh...
Well, at least this year has a pretty decent chance of being the best of the decade so far. ;-)

I agree with the GA's assessment.
It seems forever since the 2003, 2004, and I'll even throw in the 2005 teams had Tiger football at a more than respectable level.
Hopefully, this year can be that springboard season that carries the program forward and over the hump so to speak.

It was the 1992 team. Lost 5 games by a total of 17 points (3.4 ppg).
All five games were winnable games.
We lost at USM 23-21 on a last second 52-yard FG by a Freshman.
At Louisville we led 15-10 late in the game, punted, and pinned them back on their own 11. We were called for illegal motion, but UL declined the penalty. Then they changed their mind and there was a 20 minute delay. We then had to re-kick. The center hiked the ball over the punter's head and UL go the ball deep in our territory. They scored the game winning TD with 59 seconds left.
Against Mississippi State we outgained them and had 22 first downs to their 12, but they scored a TD with 2 minutes left in the game to beat us 20-16.
Against ole miss we were down 17-12 and had two chances to score the game winning TD. We failed to convert a 4th and 1 on the Rebel 37 yard line with 4 minutes to play in the game. The defense held and we had one final chance to win, but Steve Matthews threw in interception at the Rebel 31 with 1:56 left in the game.
Against Tennessee we were down 23-21 and forced them to punt deep in their own territory with about 2 minuets left in the game. All we needed was a FG from our Lou Groza winner and we would have our first ever win over the Vols. Russell Copeland had caught all three of our TD's in the game and he was back around midfield to receive the punt. We all know what happened next. UT kicked a FG with 22 seconds left to make the final score 26-21.

I remember playing Cincinnati up in Nippert in a snow-storm. I remember that everyone ran kicks back because the field was too slick for the defense to cover the returns. That was back when Nippert had a carpet field, not the new artificial grass that everyone has now.

Also the year of the walk out. What a crazy season. Best team I've ever been on. And I'd venture to say that Isaac was the third best receiver that year behind Mac Cody. Ike's numbers were better than Mac's but Cody was good!!!

They were all so good......I remember firing balls through the jugs machine at 10 yards....at a very good pace. They would catch it right in front of their face and then tuck it.
It gives me chill bumps right now thinking about the talent on that team all over the field.

That 1976 team was a heck of a football club. I remember as a kid watching/listening the games and they were in every single game. They should have beaten Tennessee that year. They out played them, were more physical but just couldn't score enough points.
