Western hasn't won a road opener in like 20 years. I think we really know where this is heading.

I saw PU on TV couple of times at end of season last year, and they weren't just bad, they were awful. Inept, even.

Doesn't sound like from what I'm reading they're ready to make giant strides this time around.

If we were ever going to open on the road with win over Big Ten team, this might be the time.

Except we are the MAC equivalent of the Boilers.

Yep. This is going to be the pillow fight of the week. Is it possible for both teams to lose?

Last year at MSU was as close as we've been in a long time. Of course, Nicholls reminded us that we were out of line.

It was exactly 20 years ago. 1994 at Miami. Last opening game road win prior to that was at Wisconsin in 1988.

Last year's MSU game was more about them (made a mistake at QB) than us.

May have to go to Extra Point kicking contest (like Penalty Kicks) to determine a "winner."

For that matter we may have made a mistake at QB. TVT was awful. Couldn't get out of the pocket, and threw 2 picks, one that went for a TD.

if there was one big question I had about Fleck and his staff it was how TVT regressed so much.

TVT had an excuse - MSU wound up with number two ranked defense in the country.

Spartans made mistake when they offered Maxwell and made him the starter. Self-inflicted.

As for your last statement - I was curious about that too. Any theories?

I don't really buy that as an excuse. TVT just looked terrible in that game. 6/20, 0 TD, 2 INT. Terrell comes in and throws a TD on his first snap of the game, made some good decisions against a very tough defense as you noted, but Terrell actually had a decent game. I thought we played about as well as we could've on defense, granted MSU's offense wasn't playing well either. But we were tackling well and covering well. Was arguably our best game of the year.

Agree. Very strange to see him take such a huge step backwards. Seemed like the offense was simplified if anything but maybe TVT was getting so accustomed to Cubit's offense that it threw him for a loop. TVT seemed like a pretty smart kid, so that was surprising. I got the feeling that him and Fleck never really saw eye to eye from the beginning.

RE: Western Michigan at Purdue (-13)
All I know is that the QB with zero career starts (and zero career snaps at that) played better.

TVT: 6-20, 73 yards, 0 TD, 2 INT
Terrell: 12-28, 120 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT

Both played against one of the best defenses in the country, in a new system on the road. Under the same circumstances.

edit: Well it looks like you deleted your previous comment that I was responding to. But that's my "expert opinion" for you.

Decided it was OT and no sense belaboring it since TVT is not around and Terrell may suffer a similar fate (benching) this Fall.

Sorry, I am jumping in way late on this thread, been enjoying the beautiful weekend rather than sitting on a computer. All I can say is that I happened to be watching when Purdue put the freshman in for the first time last year and he was a stud.

I know that Purdue was also a train wreck last season, but the Broncos are gonna have their hands full with this kid.

If there was one thing that Bill Cubit proved he could do, it was develop QBs and WRs and get them to put up huge numbers. Year in and year out regardless of who was behind center or catching passes. Had he been able to or cared at all about running the ball, things may have been different for him.

I would be shocked if we ever see the current staff have teams put up number like that consistently year in and year out regardless of the player. IMO, right now Flecks wagon may be tied to the development of Stewart over the next 3 or 4 years.

If they want to try to throw the ball (like MSU did), I like our secondary; don't care who the other QB is. If they choose to run the ball 60%+ of the time, we are screwed.

I wonder if they will be able to figure that out?
