I feel like it's his job as the face of the athletic program to not only comment for every sports related story in the local newspaper, but to foster these relationships and then leverage them for the good of the athletic department.

Now when I read an article on JMU sports I just wonder how soon before the sentance appears in the article.

I've thought the same several times, it's an expectation now in every JMU sports article, "Jeff Bourne did not respond..."

When I read that in an article, especially when it says someone "did not immediately respond", I figure the writer had a tight deadline, fired off an e-mail, and wrapped up the writing in an hour or so, without receiving a response. Nothing you can do about that if you aren't at your desk when the request for info comes.

RE: JMU discontinuing use of almost all radio affiliates
I'm not really that concerned about it as far as marketing our product. I think we have a pretty young and savvy audience, most of whom are not listening on the radio. Yes, I'm a bit old-fashioned (I don't have a smart phone but I do have an ipad) and liked the convenience of radio when I needed it. In the end it's a cost-benefit analysis issue and they decided there wasn't enough benefit for the cost.

I certainly understand this, though I doubt an article like this was done an in an hour on deadline (I certainly could be wrong) considering the announcement was a few days ago. The non quote from JB seems to be the rule rather than the exception.

Bleeding Purple - I appreciate that JB will respond to emails, but that type of response is inadequate for 2 reasons.

1) it does not scale. JB can respond to hundreds of emails, or he can respond to the DNR and reach thousands of readers.

2) the majority of folks that JMU should be trying to reach are not going to take the time to email JB. They just won't.

I see an unfortunate trend here. It seems because JMU is terrified of saying something "controversial" they end up not responding or commenting at all.

Missed opportunities in my opinion.

This is my thoughts as well. Responding to a diehard Duke is very different from a direct question from the media. No doubt he is overly cautious. This is not a good thing unless your motive is to protect your job.

I have often wondered if there were so many years of good communication with Carrier placing the "powers that be" on a never ending set of "pins and needles", having them always concerned as to what might be said next, that they now have instilled silence in this generation of JMU leadership.

I saw the "immediately" too so he off the hook on that one.

Grads from JMU, the "engaged" Virginia university don't give up easy!!!...we have a solution to the trending problem of "Jeff Bourne did not respond to phone calls or emails" showing up in articles about JMU athletics. Here is the solution, a Duke reads the articles and then emails Jeff Bourne with the same questions the reporter had in the first place. This will work because individual Dukes are reporting that they get "quick" email responses from Jeffrey... Our fellow Duke can then post the responses from Jeffrey on this board. This form of communication is nearly the same as if Jeffrey had responded to the reporter in the first place.

Solution, JMU athletics marketing style!!!

And we don't need a radio, bonus DC points.

Not odd at all as AM signals go up into the atmosphere and bounce back down. Fredericksburg just happens to be at the perfect spot to receive the WSVA signal. As illustrated below, FM signals go in a straight line. This is why should you be in the perfect location you can listen to an AM signal many 1000's of miles away. But will quickly lose the signal when you get very far from the originating tower. Whereas, with FM, as you go over the curvature of the earth you will lose the signal. You can attempt to receive a FM signal at a further distance by getting up on a high peak, but eventually the round arc of the earth will keep you from receiving the signal.

Stations actually change their signal strength at night.

Below is copied and pasted from http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&..._f_0BbuKw. I only copied the first paragraph. There is more information should you go to the link.

Most AM radio stations are required by the FCC's rules to reduce their power or cease operating at night in order to avoid interference to other AM stations. FCC rules governing the daytime and nighttime operation of AM radio stations are a consequence of the laws of physics. Because of the way in which the relatively long wavelengths (see Footnote 1) of AM radio signals interact with the ionized layers of the ionosphere miles above the earth's surface, the propagation of AM radio waves changes drastically from daytime to nighttime. This change in AM radio propagation occurs at sunset due to radical shifts in the ionospheric layers, which persist throughout the night. During daytime hours when ionospheric reflection does not occur to any great degree, AM signals travel principally by conduction over the surface of the earth. This is known as "groundwave" propagation. Useful daytime AM service is generally limited to a radius of no more than about 100 miles (162 km), even for the most powerful stations.
I knew this board was good for something. Thanks.

[Image: 250px-National_Radio_Quiet_Zone.svg.png]

I'd heard of that, but I didn't know Harrisonburg fell within it. So that partially explains the weaker WSVA signal. Although no metro area in the zone, that still effects a decent size population. I'm sure there are plenty of places out west or Alaska they could have put that with virtually no population. The Exalted Cyclops probably got it built there, like he did half the other stuff in WV....

RE: JMU discontinuing use of almost all radio affiliates
Most stations probably moaned and groaned as the internet has matured as it took listeners away from radio. However, I would say that the number of people tuning in to WSVA has probably grown and actually worked as an advantage for them. They now have access to many more listeners than they otherwise would have.
