Buffalo makes kindergarten mandatory
http://reason.com/blog/2014/07/01/city-o...rten-manda

Quote:Should kindergarten be mandatory?

Lawmakers in Buffalo, New York, think so. The city recently changed its policy and made kindergarten mandatory for all 5-year-olds. Parents in the city must now send their little ones to the schoolhouse or face enforcement through child protective service agencies.

Currently, the quasi-grade it is not mandatory in most states. While all states provide kindergarten, parents are under no legal obligation in most states to send their kids off to the school until their sixth birthday.

Policymakers in Buffalo say they need the law to improve kindergarten absenteeism rates. Before attendance was mandatory, parents who voluntarily chose to enroll their kids didn't "take attendance for kindergarten classes seriously."

Yeah, the state wants to train their serfs early.

5 years old seems a bit young. I was in pre school at the age of 5.

The indoctrination camps are getting to them earlier.

You were old then.

I was in Kindergarten at 5 and I had kids in my class that were 4. I turned 6 during the year, but I was 5 when it started and the same was true for everyone in the class except those that were 4.

Basically, if you were 4 years old and your birthday fell before the middle of October you could enroll if you wanted. Parents had the option to hold you out until you were 6 or 7 though. Anyone born after mid October had to wait until the next year when they were 5.

Our code is that if a child is 6 on September 30th, s/he must attend school. That would put him or her in 1st grade. I only know this because I just registered mine for kindergarten and it was on the website.

It can. Homeschooling is relatively popular in VA and I have seen results from one extreme to the other.

It's not my first response, but since the idealogues can't keep their hands off, then maybe that's the right course.

Anyway, the US didn't always have public schools, and the world didn't spin off its axis and spiral into the Sun.

RE: Buffalo makes kindergarten mandatory
The irony is that nations which have dramatically better educations systems than ours do not send kids to school this early. I thought liberals were all about Europeans style programs, well, this isn't one.
