Think of Louisville adding Men's Lacrosse...it is like UConn adding FB into the BE but even at a higher level. It would be like University of Chicago adding men's Football into the B1G.

Louisville would instantly be playing 5 of the greatest names in LAX.

Lacrosse was an indian game, which is heavily played by people all over Upstate NY, there are pro and semi-pro teams all over the northeast - seeing a kid on a city street isn't a stretch at all considering pro-games and commercials for pro teams are on tv ALL THE TIME! no stretch, no surprise... Louisville will likely add it, if Title IX allows!

A month ago, I was driving around in the inner city in Rochester on a Saturday morning and I saw little African American kids playing in an organized lacrosse league. At first, I thought they were playing peewee fb, but it turns out they were playing "peewee lacrosse." I knew that an organized lacrosse league has been formed in inner city high schools here but surprised to see little tykes running around with lacrosse sticks.

I believe lacrosse will be a popular mainstream American sport within 5 years and National Lacrosse League players will start making big time money in that league as well. The smart money is that the Acc will capitalize on this sport and Acc members should be starting up teams as soon as it becomes feasible for them to do so. And I'm not that big of a lacrosse fan. But I see where its headed.

This is why not taking JHU was a mistake.

RE: Will Louisville add lacrosse now?
I think Lacrosse will be added in the next couple of years at Louisville. There is a huge ground swell of support for the sport in the city of Louisville. Bellarmine University added it several years back and they are now assisting in running youth programs. My son is entering High School and has been playing for the past five years. Our youth teams fair very well against teams from Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and Indiana. The two largest Catholic Schools in Louisville, Trinity and St.X have up to 100 kids come out for the Freshman team each year and while the sport is not yet recognized by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association, the two schools have won every state title. With Louisville opening a brand new soccer complex this season, I can see them converting the old soccer field which is also used for track, into a mens Lacrosse Stadium.

I was under the impression that athletics was planning on moving all of the Track and Field events to the old Soccer and Track stadium. Basically, the old soccer field will be converted to use for throwing events (they currently throw in a field behind the Yum Practice center). That would give T&F a unified facility instead of having events at separate locations.

We already have a 1,050 seat lacrosse stadium for the women's programs so I imagine any men's program men's team would simply play there. Bellarmine only averages around 500 or so for home games and there are only ~25 programs that average over that stadium's current seating capacity. Worst case scenario, the stadium proves too small and they have to add seating capacity.

I believe that Women's Lacrosse plays on a smaller field. Can someone clarify?

The playing field for the men's game is 110 yards long and 60 yards wide (Rule 1 Section 2 of NCAA Men's Lacrosse Rulebook).

The playing area for the women's game is 110 to 120 yards long and 60 to 70 yards wide (Rule 1 Section 2 of NCAA Women's Lacrosse Rulebook).

The biggest difference in terms of the field of play are the markings. The markings for the women's game are quite a bit different than the men's. Despite that, it is fairly common for both the men and women's teams to share facilities (e.g. UVA's teams both play at Klöckner Stadium; Duke's teams both play at Koskinen Stadium, etc). The current FieldTurf at the UofL stadium would have to be redone, but you could house both a men's and women's program there for the time being.

Another thing that is fairly common is to see lacrosse programs sharing a facility with soccer programs. The size of the field is roughly the same for both and since the sports occur in different seasons (soccer in fall, lacrosse in the spring), you don't have to worry about schedule overlap. Moving the lacrosse programs to the new soccer stadium could be one option (if the seating was required), though I don't think that is something Jurich would want to do on a permanent basis. Having a separate facility for each sports program has been one of his major points of emphasis.

RE: Will Louisville add lacrosse now?
The biggest problem for the current lacrosse stadium is that its current location prevents any sort of large expansion. It has rail lines adjacent to it on the west side and Floyd street borders its east side. The north side is occupied by the Yum Practice Center. The south side is really the only area which has room for any decent sized expansion and even that is limited.

The best thing they could do is to encourage tailgating before the games. Games in Feb/March will be a little dicey but by April it should be awesome.
