RE: ODU Fans....Break down your WR position
For you BleedsGreen33, per your request in the OP, and in the spirit of cooperation here is a list of who we can expect to see at the WR position for ODU in 2014.

#5 Antonio Vaughn, 5'8" 175, Only returning starter at WR. Caught 9 TD's in 2013.

#6 Zach Paschal, 6'2" 210, caught 6 TD's in 2013.

#7 Nick England, 6'0" 180, So. transfer from FIU, was a HS WR with ODU QB Taylor Heinicke at Collins Hill, GA.

#10 David Washington, 6'3" 220, played as #2 QB but will be converted to WR, good speed and mobility, should be a quality WR.

Those four are all likely to see significant starts and PT.

Here are other WR's on the roster which will be trying to earn PT...

#2 Kirk Spellman, 5'19" 175 rJR.
#1 Melvin Vaughn 6'2" 249, So
#3 CJ Bradshaw, 5'19" 190 rSo.
84 Kevin Privott 6'1" 175, rFr.

The following freshmen will be in the mix for PT at the WR position...

Vincent Lowe, 5'8" 179, perhaps the fastest player on the roster (6.32 55M.)
Quinten Reynolds, 6'0" 190
Jonathan Duhart, 6'3" 190
William Howard, 6'3" 190
Lawrence Holley, 6'2" 175

Perhaps Adam Swann 6'4" 210 TE, Justin Noye 6'2" 185 S, or Marquis Little 5'9" 170 CB, will all get opportunities as well.

That's not the case. If you don't have both you don't have either. If you have WRs that can't get open or catch the ball then I don't care how talented your QB is, he will not win games.

The QB that comes to mind the most in this situation is Charlie Batch. Batch was a QB at EMU from 94-97. His records was 5-6, 6-5, 3-8 and 4-7.

Batch would go on to have a good NFL career with the Lions and Steelers. He was a great college QB but didn't have a supporting cast to show it on the field. In his 4 years he was 18-27.

I think this might be true in the NFL; but for college, this is fundamentally flawed logic. I'm fairly certain you couldn't put me down on the field and have Heinicke make me look great. This assumes that you have receivers that are able to compete with the other team's defensive backs. Maryland last year was what happens when the WRs couldn't compete. I expect more games to resemble that struggle now (though not nearly as bad), as a result of losing Pinkard and others.

It is flawed logic in general, but IMO OUR QB can make the WR better. don't get me wrong, pinkard is good and TH is going to miss him this season and it could very well cost us a game or two. what I meant was TH is good enough to elevate the play of other WR on the roster.

Just for giggles I took that list and added some recruiting info to the front. The folks that were Sr's were FCS recruits. The Fr we have coming in could be serious contenders for start time this season.

NR #5 Antonio Vaughn, 5'8" 175, Only returning starter at WR. Caught 9 TD's in 2013.
NR #6 Zach Paschal, 6'2" 210, caught 6 TD's in 2013.
2* #7 Nick England, 6'0" 180, So. transfer from FIU, was a HS WR with ODU QB Taylor Heinicke at Collins Hill, GA.
NR #10 David Washington, 6'3" 220, played as #2 QB but will be converted to WR, good speed and mobility, should be a quality WR.

We are simply going to hand the ball off to our stable of 5'6 running backs 40-50 times a game.

RE: ODU Fans....Break down your WR position
Any time you lose a wide receiver who was a three year starter and the leading receiver from the year before, it has to hurt, and that is what has happened in losing Pinkard. As to the others -- York never played a down for ODU and was already gone after being dismissed this spring. Bailey also was already gone. Henderson was expected to play this year after redshirting, but he was listed as second team and not a starter. Blair Roberts being redshirted was no surprise to the coaches who already were planning on that based on his need to recover from back problems. My point here is that the real loss to the current situation is two players, not five.

Other Monarch fans have already addressed those we have ready to be next man up. ODU is a passing team and deep in receivers, with the cream of the crop walking in the door this fall. The point here is – losing Pinkard and Henderson hurts, but worse things could have happened. If I was told that I had to lose one proven starter and one unproven backup at any one position on the Monarchs, and the position was my choice, I would pick wide receiver. This happening at any other position would have been a much more critical blow.

One last thing: Across the board, ODU receivers as a group have as good hands as I have ever seen on a college team. If the ball is catchable, as a rule they will catch it. ODU does not recruit receivers with bad hands. I don’t anticipate any let down in that area. What we are losing is a proven, experienced performer who has already established a strong working relationship with our quarterback, and that is what we have to replace from a stable of good hands receivers just waiting for the opportunity.

RE: ODU Fans....Break down your WR position
Great post Aggie. I agree about the biggest loss being the chemistry between Heinicke and Pinkard and I am hoping that the fact that Nick England and TH were HS teammates will provide a replacement recie er with somewhat of a bit if instant chemistry.
