Very nice! Will definitely upscale the campus even further. I get back to Memphis a couple if times a year (for one football and one basketball game, usually) and have noticed the really nice improvements over the years, since my '82 graduation. I hope to go to Memphis more often after retirement in a few years. Nothing like Memphis barbecue and Tiger sports!

The Nursing program will have 1,100 nursing students. It is a large number consider my daughter's nursing program only has 40 students.

For a city with health disparities we need our own a med school and dental school.

1 of those items has something to do with actually delivering on the mission of the university. The rest are just embellishments.

I don't think auxiliary services and quality of life enhancements are embellishments. The bio hub and nursing facilities are tier one mission priorities. Which one of those are leaving out.

I think your view of the mission is pretty narrow.

Push for Rhodes or CBU to start one, and roll programs to feed into those?

The Bio research and Nursing facilities are a great start to transforming the institution into one that can create money and companies out of research and intellectual property. Which really seems to be the key to civic and institutional excellence. Add a hospitality accelerator/incubator would be nice.

The Mission Statement of the U of M is - as it should be - broad.

Mission

The University of Memphis is a learner-centered metropolitan research university providing high quality educational experiences while pursuing new knowledge through research, artistic expression, and interdisciplinary and engaged scholarship.

The school's highest priorities are:

Enhance Enrollment Growth
Strengthen Admission Standards
Increase Graduation Rates
Increase Research Funding
Enhance Quality of Instruction

All the projects fall within the mission and priorities of the University of Memphis by providing the necessary infrastructure. Private dollars fund much if not all of the cost of sports related buildings.

I am so excited to see how my university is striving to be the best it can be. I cannot wait to see all of the new buildings and infrastructure on campus. The next few years are certainly going to be exciting in the life of the university.

The last thing I heard is that it is still in the works but it is coming along slowly. I believed it suppose to be where Towers is currently located. Hopefully it will be completed before the end of the decade.

I was thinking it was supposed to go south of where the new residences are going up that are replacing the towers. That should be the big project that really connects the campus to the highland row strip and creates more of a front door to the campus.

The music building is supposed to go on what is now Watauga Avenue.

The University slowed its plans down for a few reasons. One is that they don't quite own all of the property they intend to acquire (they own quite a bit though and are picking up a few properties here and there). The other was the housing market crash. They were knocking on doors trying to buy homes as the housing market was increasing almost monthly because the longer they waited, the more they were afraid they'd have to pay. The last is that they realized that they could re-coup some cost of the new construction.

Essentially they buy the properties with the allotted funds, rent them out to students, and then have physical plant and planning in charge of maintenance, landscaping, etc. The University collects rent from students in the properties they currently own while they wait on other homeowners to sell.

They are trying to avoid eminent domain because they think it would garner bad publicity. Eventually, I think they'll have to institute it.
