The last thing I heard is that it is still in the works but it is coming along slowly. I believed it suppose to be where Towers is currently located. Hopefully it will be completed before the end of the decade.

I was thinking it was supposed to go south of where the new residences are going up that are replacing the towers. That should be the big project that really connects the campus to the highland row strip and creates more of a front door to the campus.

The music building is supposed to go on what is now Watauga Avenue.

The University slowed its plans down for a few reasons. One is that they don't quite own all of the property they intend to acquire (they own quite a bit though and are picking up a few properties here and there). The other was the housing market crash. They were knocking on doors trying to buy homes as the housing market was increasing almost monthly because the longer they waited, the more they were afraid they'd have to pay. The last is that they realized that they could re-coup some cost of the new construction.

Essentially they buy the properties with the allotted funds, rent them out to students, and then have physical plant and planning in charge of maintenance, landscaping, etc. The University collects rent from students in the properties they currently own while they wait on other homeowners to sell.

They are trying to avoid eminent domain because they think it would garner bad publicity. Eventually, I think they'll have to institute it.

That is correct. They have an open purchase policy to buy anything that becomes available all the way to Highland.

The music/fine arts building will be a major project that will include a large performance hall. It will likely be announced within five years and will be a major link to the community. It can be a transformational addition to campus.

With all the exciting news on South Campus permits being filed, I thought it would be nice to revisit additions to the main campus. The replacement for Richardson Towers is gorgeous and on track for Fall '15 opening. The two private apartment complexes on Southern should both be ready for Fall '15 as well.

Have not seen any updates on the BioHub. Any news?

- $36M Bio Research Hub (Supposedly Fall '15, have seen no new construction)

I wonder if the location of the new music bldg would include enough room for a nearby football field? I cant see the marching band going all the way across campus from the predicted location to the field near the fieldhouse for every rehearsal.

I'm hearing rumblings that it might take until spring semester for that new dorm to be ready.

The new Music Building and Convocation Building will both be on Central east of the Holiday Inn. I have seen, heard nothing about adding an On Campus Stadium to the Master Plan (though I wish we would).

That would be a bummer.

When I was in law school parking in the Central Lot was a pain...and that was before the Holiday Inn was built. It's gonna be real bad if they add another building. I wonder if another parking garage is in the works?

Good point. The answer is yes. Another parking deck will be built inside the Central parking lot.

RE: The New UofM Campus
This is the latest master plan that I could find. It does not reflect that (6) alumni center and (3) music center have moved to Central Ave. You'll notice that (7) is a new parking deck just East of the Holiday Inn. Personally, I preferred the locations of both on this plan.

RE: The New UofM Campus
I am envious of Old Dominion's University Village that opened a few years ago behind their really nice on-campus arena. This is just one block. Strip restaurants/businesses on the first floor and dorms above it. This photo does not give it justice. Perfect place to dine before/after games.

It is very good for the City of Memphis, and area, for it to remain the way it is presently.
