RE: OT - World Cup Knockout Round
Guess all the bribe money to FIFA officials over the years left little money for trophy design. I thought the Germans had won a Golden Globe award.

It certainly can't compare to the Stanley Cup

And you can't eat your cereal from it either

I'm glad somebody brought this up. The appearance of a sport's championship trophy is absolutely crucial to my enjoyment of said sport.

(BTW I think the WC trophy is pretty cool).

Not that I think the World Cup trophy is amazing (once you put aside what it represents), but what makes the Stanley Cup trophy so great? It's just a bowl with a bunch of silver cylinders below it. That's the most generic trophy possible, you could use it for anything (including eating cereal!!).

I find it interesting that the World Cup is not a cup.

The World Cup trophy was a cup until 1974.

Nice!

He worked with Sid Burrus & Joseph Cavallaro while at Rice on a Humboldt Fellowship.

What other trophy has the names of the players from the winning team on it? Plus unlike other trophies there is only one presentation Cup that is awarded each year. There are five bands with 13 teams with players name on each ring. When space runs out the bottom ring is removed and placed in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

The tradition of each player/coach getting a day with the Cup is a great tradition (the cereal picture was Kopitar with the Cup in his native Slovenia) and creates quite a scene wherever it shows up. Hockey players, like most athletes, are superstitious and refuse to touch the Cup until they win it.
