Rakeem Cato: The Heisman Candidate
Quote:As the strongest Heisman contender from outside the major-conference picture, Cato's chances do rely in huge part on Marshall's ability to win 11 or more games during the regular season. Don't sleep on his production: Cato threw for 3,916 yards and 39 touchdowns a season ago, with both totals ranking among the nation's best, and will be provide another round of jaw-dropping totals as a senior.

I was walking in Huntington and got a picture with him, but it's like the tenth time I've seen him. Great time to be a freshmen at Marshall

Especially for a player with only two offers out of high school. Marshall and FIU (sorry, not sorry FIU).
I don't think anyone other than Cato and maybe Doc saw this level of performance coming when he was recruited.

It will be a long shot. I like the kid because he is humble, has his head on straight, wants to win and more importantly, has developed as a football player and person while at MU. Good kid.

Based on his performance the last two years and the monster game against Maryland, he ought to be in consideration heading into this year. I wish him luck. It would be good to see a player win it from a non-contract conference.

Very long shot. We've had some great college QBs in this conference who didn't even sniff an invite.

Getting an invite to NYC is about all we can hope for. I'd be thrilled with that.

Long shot or not, if he performs well Marshall will win games and the Heisman talk will be out there. That alone brings lots of recognition to Marshall and by association, C-USA. So I say, go Cato!

If Marshall can go undefeated, get into the access bowl, and win he might win it. I do agree that just getting to NYC would be a great achievement. The deck is certainly stacked against him though. Who was the last player not from a power conference to win the Heisman?

Marshall has had 2 make it as a Heisman finalist before, Randy Moss and Chad Pennington. Byron Leftwich just missed going to New York coming in 6th in the voting.

So two players from your school having done it before makes it not a tremendous accomplishment? Call a spade a spade, Cato has slightly better chances of winning it than you or I do.

He's a cool guy. I lived in the apartment beside of him, Shu, and A.J. I've never seen guys get more into a game of NBA 2k14 more than them, haha.

Marshall going undefeated is inspiring, but it is a ridiculously hard feat to actually accomplish. In the current G5 line-up, it has happened four times in the last forty years: Tulane 1998, Marshall 1999, Boise, 2006 and 2009 (May have missed one?). It only takes a few mistakes or player injuries against good teams (yes, we have several in CUSA), and it's a wash.
I think Cato is a tremendous talent, great leader, and seems like a very nice, level-headed young man, but the odds are stacked against him. It can be done, and he has talent. I just hope the stars align, and he gets an invite to New York!

I just stated that we have had 2 do it before and had a 3rd miss, so it can happen. And I have no shot, my eligibility ran out 20 years ago.

In 99 when Marshall done it we was one play away from losing 2 games. If James Williams doesn't catch the Pennington throw on 3rd and 19 against Clemson we would have had to punt on what was the last drive of the game. Also Marshall was down 20-0 at half time and 23-0 with 10 mins to go in the 3rd against Western Michigan in the MAC title game . Marshall won the game 34-30 with a Pennington to Pinkerton 4 yard pass with :04 left on the clock.

A better example might be 1998.
Game 1 - @Akron 27-16
Game 2 - Troy 42-12
Game 3 - @S. Carolina 24-21
Game 4 - @EMU 26-23
Game 5 - Little Miami 31-17
Game 6 - @OHIO 30-23
Game 7 - Kent State 42-7
Game 8 - Ball State 42-10
Game 9 - @Bowling Green 13-34
Game 10 - CMU 28-0
Game 11 - Wofford 29-27 (came down to final seconds.)
MACC - Toledo 23-17
MCB vs LVille - 48 - 29
Losing at BG made no sense and having to stave off Wofford was even more inexcusable. Going u defeated is hard no matter who is on your schedule. I worry if our guys can handle they hype and the pressure of being the hunted. Everyone is going to bring their A games and if we fail to show up for one game completely focused we could see it all crumble.
