Arkansas and Mizzou both refuse to play MO State in hoops(even buy game@their arena)
The struggles of trying to schedule games as a mid-major seems to get harder every year. Now reading this story is just frustrating as a fan of a mid-major basketball school.
"Moats said the Bears have inquired with Missouri and Arkansas about games as well, even offering to go on the road for a "buy" game. Missouri and Missouri State had a common date, but Moats said the Tigers told him they were looking for a team with a 175 or worse RPI to fill it."
""We won't quit trying," Moats said of shooting for games with Missouri and Arkansas in the future. He said Arkansas has shown little interest in playing the Bears again, home or away. The Bears beat the Razorbacks in JQH Arena's November 2008 opener, and the teams have met twice in Fayetteville."

I am a Mizzou guy, but this is pitiful, when you look at the rest of their early schedules.

I was actually both a Mizzou and Mo State fan for a long time when I was a kid/teen(and always played as MU in the video games) but as I got older and come across more mizzou fans who hated the idea of playing MSU and then the tigerboard crowds treatment of MSU, especially during the name change pretty much killed all my intrest in cheering for Mizzou. I've watched a little Mizzou football since then, but stories like this just turn me off their program.

He should send that to Mike Slive. SEC is getting killed in getting NCAA bids because of weak scheduling.

Play Ohio 1 for 1 in basketball.
We like those schools with +175 RPIs

That is a 1 for 1 I'd be happy with.

Call up NJIT. They probably have more than a few open dates.

To be fair to Mizzou, they are likely looking for a specific type opponent and Missouri State might not well fit.
Beyond that, I get not wanting to play in-state opponents. It's not trying to be disrespectful. It's just that, if you have/can have state wide following, you don't want to give people in the state a reason to cheer against your school. If you play instate schools a lot, they become rivals and it's hard to be a fan of both teams in a rivalry. If you rarely play it's easier to cheer for both though.

It's the classic scenario. P5 team has nothing big to gain by playing an in-state G5 team, but everything to lose. Same thing goes for them and SLU, though they're looking at a Big East invite that might change things a little for the future.

This is a classic example why I don't see a Division 4 forming. The power schools need the small ones more than they really let on.

I know why Mizzou won't do it, but Arkansas is the head scratcher. Yeah we beat them at our place but that was opening a new arena. You have a school 3 hours away, decent RPI and could be an affordable game for both. I guess with Mizzou in the SEC now, guess Arkansas doesn't feel the need for exposure in Missouri as much now.

I can see where, for a particular opening, Missou or Arkansas might want a particular opponent to fill their schedule. If it happens on a regular basis it's a different story IMO.

Really? It works well enough in Philly. The state of PA is usually one of the biggest contributors to the NCAA tournament. The Big 5 is a big part of that. It's good for the sport. It's good for the state. It's good for the schools. It's a shame the fart-sniffers at some of the Big Ten schools can't figure that out (and that's not just on Ohio State, since Penn State is almost as guilty). Of course, they're accountable to no one, so what do I know?

Yeah, Louisville and Cincinnati have no problem playing NKU, EKU, WKU, Murray State, etc. UL even opened up NKU's new arena, and they had a home-and-home with Butler to open the YUM center. UC frequently plays Horizon and MAC schools from Ohio and Indiana.
Last time we played Dayton a few years back, we doubled them up (won 68-34, IIRC). The big school doesn't have to worry about a vicious rivalry forming if they win handily every time.

I don't think you'll see Arkansas play The Citadel or ULM in football anytime soon either...or ever.

It's not unique to Missouri, certainly. I know that Bill Self isn't picking up calls from Gregg Marshall either.
And while the last thing a KU guy will tend to do is defend Missouri, anyone who gets their take on Missouri fans from tigerboard is just going to run across the absolute dregs of their fanbase.

Mizzou and SLU played a long time ago, and the Tigers dominated the series to a tune of 21-18. I don't like Mizzou, but scheduling is their decision, and they have chosen not to play in-state.
SLU and Mizzou will never play again, and it's just the way it is. There are 300+ DI schools out there, and one or two not playing us is par for the course. They can call SLU from the NIT-phone.

That's why tOSU won't play you, of course--and why they stopped playing you back in the day I believe. Or why Kansas won't play the Shockers. (KSU won't play the Shockers either, which I don't understand at all.)
