Kickoff Discussion #7: Savannah State at Middle Tennessee
If there is a "gimme" in this year's first week schedule, I'd certainly make a plug for this game: Savannah State @ MTSU. The Tigers from the MEAC are a truly bad football team and has only won 6 game since 2009. Whether they can turn things around, or not, this seems to be a sure win for the Blue Raiders.

But as I've said in discussing other games, complacency can be a killer. MT's defense alone should make this a winner

BTW, if you are enjoying this series on our first week's game, I'm pleased. But I'll be out of pocket for the next week, so I'll post game # 8 after the 4th.

The SSU game should be an at least 40 point win for the Raiders. When the Hurricanes played the Tigers last year, it looked like an NFL team playing a high school one. I think there will be similar results again this year when the Raiders host Savannah State. Hopefully there's a good enough crowd for this one.

MTSU can win this game by 40 even on a bad day. I'm just amazed at just how far SSU's program has fallen over the past decade or more. SSU has not had a winning season in 16 straight years with this season gearing up to make it 17.03-banghead

I'm glad we have an easy FCS team to break in the new quarterback..I'd be kinda worried if we were playing a top tier FCS school.

I don't care who we are playing, I'm just ready for football to start. You are correct in that it works in our favor to play a bad team to allow our new QBs to get some experience without any added pressure.

SSU moved from DII to FCS in 2002, in the twelve seasons since then they are 22-128 and have only won more than two games twice(3-8 in '06 and 5-7 in '08).

Over the past five years they are 6-49, of those six victories, two came against NAIA teams, two came against DII schools and the two FCS victories came against North Carolina Central, one of which came in Central's final year of transition from DII to FCS, the other of which came in Central's first year as a full FCS member(in their 2nd year in FCS, Central beat SSU by 12, this season Central won by 14).

SSU has played four games against FBS opponents.

2012
Ok St 84 SSU 0
Florida State 55 SSU 0

2013
Troy 66 SSU 3
Miami 77 SSU 7

In 2010 they lost to 1st year Georgia State 55-21 and 2nd year ODU 57-9.

I am always nervous when we play 1AA teams no matter how bad they are. Our track record against them hasn't been the greatest.
