Should CUSA Basketball Expand
IMHO there are no (really) available football teams that would add any value to CUSA. However, for the sake of basketball would the following basketball teams add value to the conference and do you think CUSA has any chance of adding them?

Wichita St, St Louis, Bradley, Xavier, Dayton & College Of Charleston

RE: Should CUSA Basketball Expand
Not sure why any of these schools would want to join C-USA excpet maybe Wichita St and only if they wanted to restart football. Charlotte wouldn't have rejoined C-USA if not for football. There's no geography or basketball advantage for these schools to move conferences. There also doesn't seem to be a financial benefit for them to move either, especially X and Dayton.

RE: Should CUSA Basketball Expand
I can't see anyone wanting to join us. Wich State might be the most likely just because the MVC isn't what it used to be. Nobody would leave the A10 to come here. College of Charleston might, but they wouldn't be a valuable addition for the conference, so I don't see any reason the conference would even want to target them.

If the A10 ever gets raided more and is left in shambles, then sure, it might be worth going after some of these guys, but for now I'm good with where we are. There really isn't much point in adding a team though unless they are going to be a consistent NCAA caliber team. Anything less than that won't bring the conference any added notoriety or money.

RE: Should CUSA Basketball Expand
There is nothing stopping C-USA from doing exactly what the A-10 did last year....

just win OOC games, win a few NCAA games and beat a few blue blood programs to get noticed early.

Might not happen this year or next but there's not one school that standouts (historically) from a number of C-USA schools.

Saint Louis has a good 3 year run going ...before that 11 years without a NCAA bid

VCU has a great run going over the past 4 years...before that still decent 3 NCAA bids in the previous 10 years

George Washington first NCAA bid in 8 years

Saint Joseph's first NCAA bid in 6 years...2 in 10 years

Massachusetts first NCAA bid in 16 years

Dayton first NCAA bid in 5 years...2 in 10 years

Richmond 2 in 10 years

La Salle 1 in 22 years

St. Bonaventure 1 in 14 years 2 in 36 years

Duquesne 0 in the last 37 years

Rhode Island 0 in 15 years

George Mason 1 in last 6 years (f4 year 9)

Fordham 1 in last 22 years

Yup. Words of wisdom.

I think the hybrid model should be explored. If we can get, say, UMass for JV golf and Indiana for ladies tiddlywinks, who are we to complain?

Leave the tiddlywinks alone

No need for anymore teams. 14 seems good. Just need to improve the teams...

RE: Should CUSA Basketball Expand
Five of teams I listed have good basketball attendance. They would enlarge CUSA's footprint (by 4 states) and would not share (states) with any of the present teams. . They would not take a full share of conference money from the football schools and they could not control the conference. I would also think that they would increase the at large bids for CUSA during March Madness.

Of them:
  • St. Louis, Xavier and Dayton are in better basketball conferences than CUSA and have absolutely no reason to move there.
  • Wichita State and Bradley are in a conference that's a little better than CUSA and is more geographically contiguous. If Wichita State leaves, it'll be for the Big East, American or A-10. Bradley is closer to Chicago and Milwaukee than any CUSA opponents and have rivalries where they are now.
  • College of Charleston is the most likely to move, but they also offer the least.
The chances of a non-football add to CUSA in the near or mid-term future are infinitesimal.

Yep, if you want to improve hoops, go to 16, add NMSU and hope you can convince UMass to join for all-sports.

It would be a VERY solid basketball conference...2-3 NCAA bids per year.

That said, I'm just thinking out loud...it'll never happen.
