I would go 78 to Birmingham (IMPORTANT - don't take old 78 when the signs tell you to. I've been every way conceivable and each way's timing and distance can be better or worse than others at any time. One time we got behind a funeral procession on 231 just past Montgomery. It was a four lane, but we went 20 miles before someone had the nerve to pass them. Just try to enjoy the trip as much as you can. ha
I agree. This is the best way to do it.
I basically use this route, but I started avoiding going through Montgomery, Troy and Elba.
I pass through Montgomery on I-65 and take the first exit out of town (can't remember the exit number). Anyway, I go through Highland Home, Luverne, Brantley, Opp and Samson then into Florida on Hwy 81 through Ponce de Leon and Bruce. I save about 15 minutes compared with going through the Montgomery and Troy stop lights.

Personally I prefer the Isle of Dauphine for the spring migration.
I've been on the island since Sat. No crowds, just beautiful beaches. Had some Apalach oysters and scallops tonight that were super delish.
F that high rise fighting for a beach spot ish. Get your wallet out if you want to hang here.
