30 YEARS AGO today...
30 YEARS AGO – Houston legend Hakeem Olajuwon is taken with the No. 1 overall pick of the NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets... He became the second Cougar to be selected with the No. 1 pick, joining Houston great Elvin Hayes (1968, San Diego Rockets).

Howard & Harden aren't the answer.

Wonder if they'd want a Jordan do over.

The Rockets are fine. I'm talking about the Coogs of course! We need more "Dreams" and "Glides"

Among big men, only Russell, Wilt, Kareem, and Shaq have been better. And Patrick Ewing is my all time favorite player.

Totally agree...

We will never witness other big time superstars like "Dream and/or a Glide"... However, I like to think coach Sampson will find us good caliber players perhaps somewhat close to our previous one, two punch. 04-cheers

I will give you Russell, Wilt, and Kareem, but I say nay on Shaq being better then Hakeem. Just because Shaq has more rings, I would not say he was a better player.

Hakeem was clearly more skilled than Shaq but Shaq more than made up for it with his overwhelming physicality, he was just so huge.

It's not the rings, the numbers do not lie- Shaq was more productive.

Shaq was the greatest center ever. Just dominant.

Yep, and I loved the Dream's style of play, but it's not even close.

I wouldn't go that far. I saw Kareem and he was better. The numbers say Russell and Wilt were, too.

I'd take Kareem over Shaq every time.

I'd take Kareem over Shaq every time.

Kareem in the 1970s was, individually, at least as unstoppable as Jordan was in the 1990s. And he was 7'2" for crying out loud. His skyhook was indefensible.

I seem to remember that one of Hakeem's ring came from outplaying Shaq. Or am I misremembering the Rockets sweeping Orlando?

No I didn't misremember it. Olajuwon owned Shaq.

No I didn't misremember it. Olajuwon owned Shaq.

Actually, while the Rockets owned the Magic, Hakeem didn't come close to owning Shaq. Shaq played a good series. Basically, while Olajuwon averaged 4.5 PPG more than Shaq, that was only because he took a ton more shots. Shaq had better FG%, and more rebounds, blocks, and even assists. Here's a good statistical breakdown:

Uh, Hakeem Olajuwon was the MVP of the series. And did I mention that the Rockets swept Orlando? LOL.

Olajuwon had 47 rebounds in 4 games to Shaq's 50. Hell about 10 of Shaq's rebounds came from Shaq bricking 3 footers.
