SMU 2015 football recruiting (and Houston)
For those SMU fans, what's the biggest reason for such an uptick in 2015 recruiting? I know that recruit rankings aren't everything, but so far SMU has more 3* and 4* players than from all of last year based on Rivals rankings?

As a side note, predictably Houston and Cincy are doing well in recruiting, while the Florida schools look to be a little slow going into the 2015 recruiting season. Not a lot of quantity, but from florida quality, with their recruits rated pretty high.

Uconn as always is in last place and seems to be forever a destination where no "BCS" recruits go. It is the only AAC school without a 3* commit and their recruits are rated lower than any other AAC school. ECU and Memphis not surprisingly are doing better than Uconn.

RE: SMU 2015 football recruiting (and Houston)
Long story short - June Jones has never believed in recruiting in the traditional sense. At Hawaii, their budget was tiny and the staff basically just reviewed film that was sent their way and they then sent offers without actually seeing many of their prospects in person. They went the Juco/transfer route often (Colt Brennan), and they were able to keep many polynesian (sp?) players at home.

Fast forward to JJ at SMU. He does not change his recruiting strategy to match his new job. He hires an old staff, with zero Texas HS connections. I am talking old, NFL type guys. He makes no effort to make inroads into the D/FW schools and all that talent. He wants kids that want to be at SMU, so he reviews tapes that are sent in and makes offer. No selling the school or himself. And our recruiting results are horrible, 2 star kids without any BCS offers and sometimes, no D1 offers at all.

JJ finally has a losing season. Many calls for his head, not just for the 5-7 record but for the poor recruiting results. As part of his extension, it is believed that our AD stepped in and put recruiting mandates in the contract. Our AD has regular recruiting meetings with JJ now. It is a shame that we bascially had to MAKE our HC recruit, but that is the reality.

We also added Steve Broussard to our staff from UCLA. Between him and Jason Philips, we have 2 very good recruiters. But that is all we have.

Those quotes are funny. If only recruiting rankings translate to on-field performance. The reality is UCONN has more guys in the NFL than just about every single AAC schools and many in the P5. Do you think UCONN coaches give a crap about recruiting rankings?

That is nuts. Tubs fired the D Coordinator after the season, reason...he was not recruiting well enough. His coaches have to recruit, that is the mantra.

LOL.

Hopefully, JUNE GOETH!

It was crazy he didn't hire more Texas-centric guys, but word is JJ is a very loyal guy and bascially gives staff jobs to his friends and ex-players.

Honestly, most fans would happily accept JJ as coach for years to come if he would hire the right staff and get results on the recruiting front. We need 4 Jason Phillips on our staff. We ARE seeing an uptick in recruiting this year, but it seems too little, too late for me.

Why now, and not the first 6 years??

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

He's making a last ditch effort to make it look like he cares about recruiting now that his $2,000,000 a year gravy train is in jeopardy. Unfortunately for him all those years he phoned it in have left him with very little talent and he's looking at a disastrous 2014 season which will likely bring his tenure to an end.
