Interesting, but doesn't this mean that anybody can now market clothing etc with the image and thus there might be more produced?

Yep. I'm guessing the theory is the 'Skins get a huge cut in merchandising dollars, change their name and the brand disappears.

RE: (OT) Patent office cancels Redskins trademarks
If the team can't enforce the trademark, no one will pay them royalties for merchandise so the team will lose millions ... but more importantly, the NFL loses millions since I believe the league gets a bigger cut of the royalties than the team. So one might expect the league to now change their stance on the name because it will hit them directly in the pocketbook. Also, I understand Washington, like many sports teams, gets a lot of tax breaks, which will be hard for the city/state/country to continue to support, given they would now be using a logo legally determined to be "disparaging"
Of course, Snyder may try to appeal. This same thing happened before about 15 years ago, and after a number of years was overturned in the courts, but only on a technicality, not because of the merits of the suit. Many people think, after the Donald Sterling fiasco, the climate is different now and a challenge is less likely to win. We'll see.

Its theft by odummer and his administration... so, someone gets offended and the fed govt can seize your property? So, the Packers will offend the gay folks so, they have to change their name? the Rockets offends the porn industry they have to change their name?
The so called leaders in this country has turned us into pansies... makes me sick... but, more importantly... this is a power grab.. I don't think it has anything to do with the name...

The sensitivities thing has been going on for a long time. But, the federal government taking this action is way out of line IMO.
Next they'll be listing the Patriots as a terrorist organization.

I used to care about the whole "Redskins is offensive to Native Americans" argument for years until Rick Reilly wrote an article a few years back stating that many secondary schools, predominantly Indian, adopted the Redskins nickname years ago and have no plans to change it. If these people don't care,I sure won't.

Good old federal government sticking their noses into something that is none of their business.

Just change the official name to Redskin Potatoes and keep everything else the same, leaving the nickname Redskins for short
