Question For USM Fans
Why is your stadium called the rock? App State's is called the rock too, which I get since it is built on the bedrock of a mountain, but I've always wondered by yours has that name.

Was actually wondering the same thing. Btw, my dad was in the US Army for 20 years, and we were stationed in a tiny town in Germany called Wildflecken for 4 years. The US Army Post in Wildflecken was high up on a hill overlooking the town, and it was also called "The Rock". The base was originally a training area used by the German Army (Wehrmacht) as well as by the Waffen-SS during WWII before we took it. It has since been decommissioned by the USA and is now being used as a warfighters simulation center by the German infantry.

RE: Question For USM Fans
It's called "The Rock" because it's made of all solid concrete, well most of it is.

Some of it is brick, but mostly concrete.

RE: Question For USM Fans
Actually, there is a story behind it back to when they built the original stadium. I will try to get the true story and post it here

I bet USM's stadium isn't named after a convicted felon like Happy Appy's is.

RE: Question For USM Fans
It was back to when they built the stadium that players helped bring rocks from behind Mississippi Hall on campus and one of them said that the east stadium will be built like a rock. AD Bill McLelland placed a statue of a rock outside the dressing/weight room facility somewhere around 1993 for the players to touch as they entered the field to play.

I remember also hearing that the players compared bringing in the rocks to working at Alcatraz, which is of course, called "The Rock."

Two views of the east rock pre expansion. My oldest brother lived inside this in the late 60's.
