Ditched Homecoming Queen for her Attractive but little known sister!
Not literally but figuratively!

I grew up in Tampa FL and my dad is from Tallahassee so my household was always Seminole fans since I could remember. We'll when I was about 10, my dad and I was watching the FSU vs Miami game and low and behold I was drawn more to guys flying around the field talking smack and backing it up with their play.

Needless to say from then until I was about 20 my dad and I would watch the annual game with my other siblings, with me being the only Hurricane fan in the house, it would get pretty intense. I gave this little back story to show the passion my family had for two of Florida's established programs (Prom Queen).

Funny thing is, since I graduated from USF (her attractive but not as we'll known sister) I have lost my love for the Hurricanes, I don't even go out of my way to watch them on tv anymore unless it doesn't conflict with me watching the bulls or attending their games, my dad has even converted to a USF FAN, and I have 5 sons and my wife whom attended USF as well and they are all die hard bulls fans as well.

Has any other AAC member ditched their states Prom Queen for her attractive little sister?

Hey, good for you. If only all G5 alumni/students were like that.

I've never really cared for any teams in my state. I liked Duke basketball a little (mostly out of disdain for Carolina fans), but don't pull for them or watch them today. I do like Coach K though, he's an alright guy.

I really liked ECU and Tennessee. I thought I would go to ECU for four years and go to UT for grad school, but decided I liked ECU too much and threw two more years to the Pirates. I don't really keep up with the Vols anymore. If it doesn't interfere with tailgating, attending games, or watching games, I'll turn on a Tennessee game. However, if it comes between ECU and UT for a recruit, coach, $$, eyeballs, etc...I'll pick ECU every time. Not a very good fan am I? I suppose they just remind me of family in Tennessee....

I feel you! Four of my sons play little league football and they all say they want to play for the Bulls. I just wanted to hear from other people and see if they felt the same way I did. I think with my five sons, I have just increased the Bulls Alumni base by a few generations. Never thought I would see the day where I would close the door on a team I literally grew up watching since I was a kid (Miami)but I have zero regrets. GO BULLS

RE: Ditched Homecoming Queen for her Attractive but little known sister!
When I was a kid we lived only an hour north of Ann Arbor. My Uncle worked for the University as an athletic trainer for the football team. My father played for Bo at Miami. So due to their connections my brother and I were diehard Michigan fans for much of our youth. We would get to meet Bo at every game, and always got Michigan Football items. I have helmets, footballs, Rose Bowl bags etc.. When we moved to Cincinnati my Grandfather would take my family to every night game at Nippert. Being that close tot the action was amazing to me. So I instantly became a Bearcat fan, but still loved the Wolverines. I thought life was grand I had my Wolverines you would compete for National Championships, and I had my fun Bearcats who I felt I belonged to chugging along winning 5-8 games a year. I attended the University of Cincinnati where I walked on to the football team, and I began to sway my love for Michigan diminished to 45% then downhill from there. When UC was invited to the BIG EAST, and seemingly to be part of the BCS things changed even more. I then quit watching Michigan games, but always knew the score. A few years into the BIG EAST era Michigan recruited a player that UC was interested in after that I began to hate Michigan. Now I have no clue who they are playing, and never watch a game. It is CINCINNATI FOOTBALL everyday all day.

I always heard about UT growing up I was never drawn to them. After high school I was top 10 in my class so I was automatically accepted to any public school in the state but after visiting Austin and UT and seeing who from my school was going to UT, I decide I never wanted to be one of them. I liked the blue collar, working class, underdog spirit at UH. This was in 2009 and I graduated early in 2012, needless to say the progress I saw just while I was a student was incredible. I'm a loyal Cougar.

My dad was a UH grad and die-hard fan, while we never lived in Houston when i was old enough to go to games we still made a couple of football and baseball games. Ive always been a Houston fan and the only other schools I've ever seriously considered were Norwich and the Naval Academy. The sight of burnt orange or maroon makes me nauseous
After doing 2 years here and being around other schools and states, Im very happy with my choice

It's called loyalty. You childhood teams are not and never should be on the same level as the school you actually attend. You pull for your own school. Not your Dad's or some school a bunch of your friends pulled for in high school. Loyalty to YOUR alma mater. I do realize not everyone goes to a FBS school and wants to pull for a FBS level school...so, there are exceptions like this. Hopefully your kids will pull for their alma maters and not someone else's.

I was a FSU fan for years. 3 of my class mates played there. I started following UCF when hinshaw was still qb, pre Daunte days. More and more I followed UCF and FSU became the little sister for me. Once Daughter went to UCF it was over, Knights are my school period. I still like FSU but they are a distant 2nd.

Yeah, unfortunately there are probably enough current AAC students who pull for another fbs team (in either football or basketball) to fill up both of the new stadiums being built in this conference.

Never an issue for me. I was born and raised in Memphis, so I hated the big state school, Tennessee, from the beginning, long before I ever graduated from Memphis (State).

RE: Ditched Homecoming Queen for her Attractive but little known sister!
Ohio State won the national championship in 2002, my sophomore year of college. Until that day, I literally had no idea that they were a big school for college sports.

I was 100% a basketball fan until I went to UC for grad school. I grew up thinking of OSU as a decent local school on the same level as Dayton or Ohio U. I literally had no idea that they were a colossal school with a large fan base because I didn't know a lot of people who liked them. Most people I knew were either UC or Xavier fans, along with some Notre Dame fans.

*** edit ***
Come to think of it, I was Notre Dame fan growing up. I guess they were the "Homecoming Queen" in your analogy. Still a fan because a lot of friends went there, but they're a clear 2nd on my list today. Unlike most UC fans I never thought it was bad for BK to leave for ND (same with Dantonio to MSU or Jones to UT). That stirred a lot of hate in a (very) vocal segment of UC fans, but I think most UC fans understood that it was a good career move for him.

RE: Ditched Homecoming Queen for her Attractive but little known sister!
Eh, what the heck. I'll bite.

I grew up in a small town just north of Greenville and ECU. My dad took me to most of the ECU games growing up. I don't mean just football. He and I went to basketball games and baseball games too. I grew up a Pirate fan in a town that was overrun with insufferable Kerlina fans. Though pretty much non-existent for most of the year, they came out of the woodwork during basketball season. I was constantly ridiculed for being a Pirate, but it didn't damper my spirits. In the 1980's, ECU had a large Pirate Helmet over a golf cart that would ride out on the football field. My friend's father had the honor of keeping it in his garage for a while. That thing was like a shrine to us Pirate fans; the few of us that lived in the town. I sat in it countless times and imagined driving it on the field. We dreamed of sneaking it out for a ride, but, alas, his dad made sure to hide the keys all too well.

While the other kids in town were gloating over the "Dean Dome" being constructed and their parents having given enough money to get permanent seats, I was so very happy to be on the old wooden bleachers in Minges Coliseum, prior to its renovations in the mid 90's, watching Blue Edwards play; especially when David Robinson and the midshipmen came to town.

On one occasion, I was invited by a Kerlina friend to go to a blue-white basketball game in Chapel Hill. I purchased a "proud to be a Tarheel" T-shirt from the souvenir stand and had the team autograph it. Dean Smith, Joe Wolf, Warren Martin, JR Reid and others. It was with GREAT pleasure that I burned that T-shirt later, when I got home. I made sure some of my Kerlina friends saw me do it too. The look on their faces was priceless. I never got asked back to Chapel Hell, which was fine.

It is because of the Kerlina fans I grew up around that, to this day, have caused me to have an unhealthy hatred for anything baby blue. They are by far, the most arrogant and obnoxious people I've ever had the misfortune to be around. I was born a Pirate fan and raised a Pirate fan. I never applied to UNC-CH; couldn't bring myself to do it. Although accepted everywhere I applied (with scholarship money to most), I chose ECU. It was the easiest decision of my life.

-Dad played basketball & golf for Wake Forest.
-Mom went to Wake Forest.
-Uncle went to Wake Forest.
-Sister went to Wake Forest.
-I grew up in Winston-Salem. (Home of Wake Forest)
-I grew up going to basically every WFU football & basketball game for as long as I can remember.

I got accepted to Wake Forest, but I wanted to venture out on my own and do something different. A lot of kids from my HS who had graduated a year earlier went to ECU and would come back occasionally and rave about how awesome it was, and how awesome the football games were, how hot the girls were, etc. As an 18 year old kid, that was music to my ears...

Since then, I've received a BA & MA from ECU, and if I had to do it over again, I'd choose ECU in a heartbeat. I was fully converted to Purple & Gold by Christmas of my Freshman year.

04-cheers

I wasn't a fan per se as a kid, but I enjoyed LSU growing up in Baton Rouge. Long story short, I never wanted to actually go there though, and when I decided to go to Tulane, I saw the nasty side of LSU fans - many of whom were close family friends. The level of rudeness I started experiencing really turned me off quickly.

Then after Katrina a lot of us Tulane students had to go to LSU for a semester because Tulane (and basically New Orleans) was closed, and that turned dislike into outright hatred. I have never been treated so poorly in my life, and I can't count how many times I was told to go home when (a) I'm from Baton Rouge, and (b) even if I were originally from New Orleans, my home was destroyed in a disaster.

So yeah...I didn't regret dropping that outhouse upriver when I did. 07-coffee3
