Probably the timing, with Bohn coming in and getting his feet wet. My guess anyway.

Report: Mick Cronin officially signs contract extension
Enquirer Sports report 10:02 a.m. EDT June 23, 2014

According to ESPN's Andy Katz, University of Cincinnati men's basketball coach Mick Cronin has signed a new 7-year deal with the Bearcats.

Katz says the $2.2 million-per-year deal.

According to the Enquirer's Cliff Peale, the UC board of trustees is expected to approve the deal later today.

Cincinnati's Mick Cronin: Signs a new 7-year, $2.2 million a year deal (approved by board of trustees, he says).
— Andy Katz (@ESPNAndyKatz) June 23, 2014

In February, Cronin addressed rumors about a contract extension to the Enquirer's Bill Koch:

"I appreciate how much he's reached out," Cronin said of UC President Santa Ono. "We've talked a lot about basketball, probably more than he really should. He's running a major Research I institution. But he cares, so that's exciting for me. Everything that needs to happen here is going to happen and I'm pretty confident in that.

"That's really what I'm worried about. As far as me, if that happens for me, great, and my staff as well. But the good thing for me is that he and I have become a lot closer through Whit's (Babcock) departure and we've talked about remaining that way. Look how fast he was able to put everything on the shelf and hire Mike Bohn, not an easy thing to do to find an experienced, veteran athletic director, somebody that's a veteran and is not looking to pad his resume and get out of here. That was huge.

"That alone sent me a message, along with how much we've conversed over the last month. I'm lucky to have President Ono. I appreciate him, but as far as all that stuff, I don't have anything to sign. I think I've made it pretty clear where I want to be. I don't think I've ever wavered on that one."

Mick Cronin is one of the worst basketball coaches and only cared for one player who's gone now. So let's sign him for 7 years. Cincinnati..

Maybe for the purpose of sending folks to taunt Xavier players?

He should tell them not to forget the red paint.

So both Cronin and Tuberville will earn more than the university will from the AAC TV contract? Is this sustainable in the long run?

If it were not sustainable, would they do it? That is like complaining about baseball or basketball players salaries. If the owners couldn't afford it, would they pay them?

Whatever the market will bear.

I agree that the TV Contract blows. However, you are assuming the salaries and expenses are coming from the TV contract. UC also obtains revenue from ticket sales, contributions/donations, the third tier revenue from IMG college, Adidas and other sources.

It is incumbant on the fan base to give us much money and support as possible. When Louisville was in the Big East they garned the same $3M TV deal that we did. However, because they were able to generate revenue from other sources they still had a top 20 revenue generating athletic department, which enabled them to pay their coaches handsomely (Rick Pitino makes $8M/yr, Charlie Strong was making $4M and they were payign their olympic sport coaches very well also).

Exactly right, revenue comes from many different places. UC itself has a billion dollar budget for entire university so in the long run athletics is just a part of the equation. Students, alumni, and fans need to share the burden if we want UC to stay at the highest level. Even with the Big Ten's revenue the financial burden on Ohio State and Michigan fans is rather high.

Very good posts guys. If we want to continue to rise as an athletic department the fans/alums need to dig into those pockets. Our ticket and donation levels are very reasonable when compared across college athletics.
