Miami Recruits 9-Year Old Girl

Well this one has to be a new record. How young is too young to recruit in search of the golden prodigy child? She hasn't even reached puberty. Most 9 year olds want to go to Disney World in the summer while she's touring Miami's campus and playing on her high school varsity team. She looks like a slasher. Looks like they'll have to fight UCONN for her though.

"The 4-foot-7 phenom is the starting point guard on the Downey Christian High School in Orlando. The fourth grader averages 14.8 points and 7.5 assists per game and, according to Jamie Newman, her father and head coach in a recent ESPN interview, "She wants to play for her country, for Connecticut and in the WNBA."

Her biggest accomplishment to date? Dropping 63 against boys on her 11U AAU team, her father said in the interview."

This is just unfortunate on so many levels.

I'm not sure what bugs me most about the situation--that the little girl did not know the basics of self preservation, that her parents were so clueless about her social development, that the administration and coaches were sweeping it under the rug, or just how freaking clueless the 'big boys' were/are.

Not to disparage any football players here, because what I'm going to say doesn't apply to a huge percentage. But because of the few 'big bad guys' who played football, it was just basic instinct to ignore/avoid them when we were teenagers,especially when they were gathered together in clumps.

You get these guys who are bigger and stronger than everyone else. They are expected to perform on all levels...athletic and sexual. Many times they are a bit on the 'virginal side' themselves, having bonded more with each other than any 'outsiders'...including females. Then you add PEDs and other drugs and you get a bad mix of volatility. No excuses...Just more education about real life is needed.
