Sad to see him go. One of my favorite players while growing up.

Most amazing stat about him for me, only 34 multi strikeout games. Loved watching him play as kid and even had an instructional video I watched when I would hit a slump.

RE: OT: RIP Tony Gwynn
In the past few years, he had been trying to get MLB to change their tobacco policy.

He went way too soon.

I did not know that he had cancer.

That's right up there with 19 straight seasons of a .300+ batting average, no lower than a .309 in any full season, and .338 career average. Those numbers are astounding. He was on of the ultimate examples of hard work and study of technique paying off. He was an avid learner when it came to hitting. If only we could all be so driven and dedicated.

I love that stats that are flying around today.

Tony Gwynn would have to go 0-4 in 295 straight games to drop his career batting average to .300.

Starlin Castro has more career strikeouts than Tony Gwynn.

I remember my Dad always calling my attention when Gwynn stood at the plate. He was hoping Gwynn's philosophy and approach would rub off on me. Great hitter and ambassador for the game.

He faced Greg Maddux over 100 times and NEVER struck out.....he hit over .400 against him.

Greg Maddux was one of the best pitchers of this generation mind you.

Very impressive. I think Gwynn only struck out three times in one game once. Dude played 20 seasons. Heck, some modern day players strike out 3 times per game multiple times a month.

Struck out 434 times in 10,232 plate appearances over 20 seasons. Only pitcher to strike him out 3 times in a game was Bob Welch who passed away last week.

Stupid. They're adults. They can decide if they want to use tobacco or not, they don't need MLB deciding it for them.

Anyway.. my great grandpa was a scout for the Padres and I remember him getting me an autographed Tony Gywnn poster back in the 90's.

MLB has banned smoking in the club houses and on the ball fields... they should ban chewing tobacco too! If not for the risk to the health of players doing the chewing for how disgusting it is for those around them, as those who chew spit everywhere!
