RIP Tony Gwynn
One of the greatest hitters in the history of baseball passed away this morning at 54 years old. He'd been battling cancer for the last several years.

Sad new. He was probably the greatest hitter I've seen in my 30+ yrs of watching baseball.

RIP.

RE: RIP Tony Gwynn
Greatest hitter in modern baseball. Sad as hell about this. I loved that guy.

19 straight seasons hitting over .300 is something that we will likely never see again.

But of all the amazing Tony Gwynn stats my favorite is that in his career he faced the Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz trio over 200 times in his career and only struck out a total of three times. That's just mind blowing. What a great mind for the game we lost today, and more importantly what a great person.

Chewing tobacco appears to be the most likely cause of his cancer.

That's what he attributed it to. Just makes it all the sadder.

I loved his voice too, I could listen to him talk about baseball all day. He's really going to be missed.

Saw him play an exhibition at Timmy Mac. Well in to his career and he signed a lot of autographs.

Damn! Bad news. Tony was a great guy and player.

What is so bizarre is that in the mid 90s I was in San Diego on business and stayed over the weekend. Among other things I attended a Padres game and got my kids autographs from Tony Gwynne and Ken Caminiti, now they are both gone.

This is indeed very sad news for baseball. He was a great ambassador for the game and will be missed.I was at the game in St.Louis when the Cardinals honored him before the first game started. He said that if he'd ever left San Diego it would've been to go to St.Louis.But he loved the city and was never going to leave.
